MONTREAL – While visiting an immigration job bank in St. Michel, Premier Pauline Marois promised to strengthen Quebec’s language laws if re-elected.
Alongside language minister Diane De Courcy, Marois said businesses under federal jurisdiction would have to conform to Bill 101.
It’s not the first time the Parti-Québécois has floated the idea, although the measure was never included in the now defunct Bill 14.

Bill 14 was the minority PQ’s attempt to strengthen Bill 101. It died in 2013 due to lack of support from opposition parties.
Banks, telecommunication companies and federal crown corporations among others would be affected by the change.
Marois insists it’s the next step to protect French in Quebec.
The premier says businesses that don’t conform would be cut off from contracts with the provincial government.
