MONCTON, N.B. – New Brunswick’s Department of Health confirmed Monday that a child in the province has tested positive for Enterovirus D-68.
Dr. Jennifer Russell, acting chief medical officer of health, said that the patient was a school-aged child without any underlying medical conditions who was hospitalized for four days and then released in early October.

The unnamed child is now doing well.
“It’s very, very concerning for parents and health care workers of course because of all the things we were seeing out west and in the States with the neurological symptoms, but in this case we weren’t seeing that, so we’re quite grateful,” Russell said.

Confirmation of test results take several weeks because they have to be sent to the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg. The Department of Health just received the positive test results.
Dr. Russell said the results do not impact the treatment provided.
There are no other suspected cases in the province at this time.
