TORONTO — For a humble city councillor, Norm Kelly has an enormous fan base; the newly minted social media star has now amassed over 100,000 followers on Twitter
Kelly says when he created his account, he made a cautious decision to not use Twitter as a diary.
“Some people do that, ‘this is what I am doing right now, this is what I’m doing in a few minutes time,'” he said. “I wouldn’t use it as an extension of my political life, it’s just designed for me to have fun.”
Even Twitter Canada is recognizing Kelly’s growing following. They released this Tweet congratulating Kelly on his 100,000 followers.
In just two weeks, Kelly’s Twitter fanbase has grown from over 82,000 followers to over 105,000, surpassing all his city council colleagues save for Rob Ford. In fact, he’s now got more followers than constituents; his Ward 40, Scarborough-Agincourt has just over 62,000 residents, according to the most recent census data.
