Bayern Munich, FC Augsburg bring refugee children with them onto pitch before game

Bayern Munich and FC Augsburg football teams led refugee children out onto the pitch ahead of their match at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Saturday.

Ahead of the game, players from both sides took to the pitch holding hands with a German child on one side and a young refugee on the other in what was described by Bayern officials as “a symbol for the integration of refugees”.

Referee Knut Kircher allowed one young man to carry the official match ball out to the centre circle.

Bayern Munich have already pledged a donation of one million euros (1.13 million US dollars) from a forthcoming friendly match to provide German language classes, food and football equipment for refugees.

Banners reading “Refugees welcome” or “Welcome to Germany” were visible at Bundesliga matches across the country last weekend.
