Saskatchewan NDP could face sanction for leaking details of provincial budget

There will be a probe into how New Democrats in Saskatchewan leaked details of the provincial budget.

The government has passed a motion sending the matter to the Standing Committee on Privileges for a full investigation and that could result in sanctions.

The Opposition gets a copy of the budget in advance and has to sign an agreement not to release details before it is tabled in the legislature.

But the NDP emailed a news release with details and reaction about an hour before Finance Minister Kevin Doherty delivered the budget Wednesday afternoon.

NDP interim leader Trent Wotherspoon has apologized for the breach.

Government House Leader Ken Cheveldayoff won’t speculate on a potential punishment, but notes that a media outlet was banned from advanced briefings for six months when it leaked budget details a few years ago.
