ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A lawyer in St. John’s, N.L., has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of hundreds of thousands of Canadians affected by a privacy breach involving student loans.
The federal government has confirmed is has lost a portable hard drive containing the names, social insurance numbers, addresses and birthdates of 583,000 people who applied for student loans between 2000 and 2006.

Bob Buckingham says his office believes the number of people affected is closer to two million.
At least one other law firm has launched a similar lawsuit.
Merchant Law Group says it’s filing for class actions in Calgary and Winnipeg.
