Highway 401 reopens after being closed over 24 hours due to ‘unsafe road conditions’

A major Ontario highway was closed on Monday due to “unsafe road conditions,” according to provincial police in Lambton County.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 402 were closed in Sarnia between Airport and Mandaumin roads at around noon on Monday, according to OPP.

On Wednesday, the OPP announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the highway had reopened.

This followed the timeline which had been provided by the Ministry of Transportation Tuesday as a spokesperson told Global News that the repairs were expected to be completed that evening.

They explained “the deformation (in the highway) is due to recent high temperatures.”

OPP warned motorists to seek alternative routes while also allowing extra time for travel.

Police are advising drivers to get off the highway at Airport Road and follow a detour along London Line to Mandaumin Road before getting back on the highway.

Highway 402 runs between Sarnia and London, allowing travellers to reach the border crossing into Michigan.
