NEWMARKET, Ont. – Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty is expressing his condolences to friends, family and police after the death of York Regional Const. Garrett Styles north of Toronto this morning.
The premier said in a statement from the legislature he was deeply saddened to learn of the young officer’s death in the line of duty.
The officer was conducting a traffic stop on rural Highway 48 east of Newmarket at about 5 a.m. when he was struck and pinned by a vehicle.
McGuinty says today is an example of the sacrifice that police officers make for the general public.
He said Styles’s death is a tremendous loss not only for those who loved him, but for all of us.
