EDMONTON – The city is looking for witnesses after unauthorized tree removal on Valleyview Point, a residential area that overlooks the North Saskatchewan River and Buena Vista Park.
Approximately $19,000 worth of trees were chopped down by a resident city officials believe was trying to improve their view of downtown Edmonton.
“We consider it ‘view cutting’ – people seem to have cut down so they can have a better view of the River Valley,” Jeannette Wheeler, the Principal of Forestry for the City of Edmonton, explained.

No charges have been laid at this point.
“We do not endorse this,” Wheeler told Global News.
“We are trying to have a city of trees… If we remove trees, we are not gaining anything.”

Wheeler estimates the trees that were cut are more than 40 years old.
“We’re looking for some witnesses to see who has done this cutting,” she added. “We do need witnesses in order to pursue this.”
Anyone found responsible for cutting down trees on city property would face a mandatory court appearance, and potentially a large fine.
