TORONTO – The governing Liberals say bad weather is to blame for delays in completing a new Hamilton stadium and key venue for the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Games.
The delays also mean the Tiger-Cats football team won’t be able to use the stadium – which would have about 22,500 permanent seats – for its first two home games of the season.
The CFL team says it will have to use a different field at McMaster University – which has 6,000 permanent seats and temporary seating for another 6,000 – for games scheduled this month.

Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid says the delay is unfortunate, but the Ticats will be able to use the new Tim Hortons Field this summer.
Michael Coteau, the minister responsible for the 2015 Games, says taxpayers won’t be on the hook for any cost overruns.

The team spent the entirety of last season at the University of Guelph while the new $145.7-million stadium was under construction.
It was slated to open this month, a year before it was to host all 32 men’s and women’s soccer competitions during the Pan Am Games.
Once completed, it’s expected to have a potential capacity of 40,000 through temporary seating.
