WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg landmark has been renamed in honour of a long-time city councillor.
The Redwood Bridge will now be known as the Harry Lazarenko bridge.
Council approved the name change in June this year – it was made official Friday morning at ceremony at the foot of the bridge, which was built in 1908.
“It’s wonderful,” Lazarenko told reporters. “You give credit where credit is due, and I appreciate what the mayor, council, what they did.”

Lazarenko, now retired, served nine terms over three decades as the city council representative for various north end Winnipeg wards. He retired for health reasons in 2010.
“Harry Lazarenko spent three decades dedicated to the people of the City’s North End and just as long ensuring we protect our City’s riverbanks, so this location is a truly fitting location to honour him for his exceptional length of public service to Winnipeg,” Mayor Sam Katz is quoted in a news release.
