HALIFAX – A former Ontario cabinet minister has been named president and CEO of a business development agency in Nova Scotia.
Laurel Broten’s appointment at Nova Scotia Business Inc. takes effect Jan. 26.
Broten is a lawyer who resigned from politics in June 2013 after serving in a number of portfolios in Ontario’s Liberal government including education, environment and children and youth services.

She moved to Halifax with her family and in February 2014 was appointed to lead a review of Nova Scotia’s tax system by the provincial government.

Her report released in November said Nova Scotia should introduce a carbon tax like British Columbia and broaden its harmonized sales tax to cover previously exempt items including children’s clothing, diapers and home energy costs.
Broten’s report also said the proposed tax increases should be offset by lower income and corporate tax rates and a government spending freeze.
