Okanagan communities to benefit from funding to prevent wildfires

KELOWNA – The Provincial Government has announced five million dollars to help wildfire prone communities in the Okanagan and elsewhere in B.C. prevent
devastating fires this season.

The money is going towards the wildfire protection program to allow communities to continue prescription and fuel treatment projects such as the recent
mitigation work done at Rose Valley Regional Park in West Kelowna.

The government first introduced the wildfire prevention initiative in 2004. Between 2004 and 2014, the program provided $62 million to help local
governments and First Nations significantly reduce wildfire risks in interface areas, where urban developments border on forests and grasslands.

Communities interested in the funding must apply to secure some of the cash
