Leverette says the gun was left on the bed. Leverette says it is not known if the child was playing with the gun, but he somehow was able to grab the handgun and shoot himself. Authorities say the child’s mother was not home when the shooting happened.

Leverette says no charges have been filed, though the investigation is ongoing.
