NDP Leader Gary Burrill has unseated Liberal incumbent Joachim Stroink in Halifax Chebucto.
Both have served one one term as MLA, with Burrill serving as MLA in Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley in 2009 before he was unseated by PC MLA Larry Harrison. Burrill became leader of the NDP last year without a seat in the election and opted against running in the byelection for Halifax Needham.

The United Church minister won with 45.6 per cent of the vote, edging out Stroink by a little more than 500 votes.
Prior to Stroink, the riding has been primarily an NDP riding dating back to the 1980s with one exception — the Liberals held it from 1993-98. It was held by former NDP leader Alexa McDonough in the ’80s into 1993 while former NDP MLA Howard Epstein held it from 1998 until 2013.

The riding was created in 1967 and was held by Progressive Conservative MLA James H. Vaughan until 1970 — the only PC to hold the district since its creation.
