A former teacher and volleyball coach in Wakaw, Sask., has been fined $10,000 and has lost his teaching certificate for a year over several professional misconduct complaints.
Lyle Gartner was accused of slapping and grabbing five students’ buttocks in different situations over a four-year span.

He also met with one of the students in private in an attempt to persuade her to retract her allegations.
The Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board wrote in its discipline decision Gartner’s private meeting with the student was a key factor in deciding the penalty.
