A Quebec provincial police officer is in hospital after being shot Tuesday night at a home in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, southwest of Montreal.
Officers responded to a 911 call about a domestic dispute on du Sentier Street at about 9:30 p.m.
As police arrived, a 72-year-old man allegedly opened fire, hitting an officer in the abdomen with a bullet during the shootout.
The unidentified officer was rushed to hospital with serious injuries in critical but stable condition.
When police entered the home at about 2 a.m., they found the body of a woman in her 60s, since identified as Joanne Chayer, and the man with undisclosed injuries.

The suspect suffered undisclosed injuries, was arrested and taken to hospital to be treated.
A large security perimeter was set up during the operation and neighbours were evacuated.
The Sureté du Québec (SQ) has set up a command centre as the investigation continues Wednesday.
According to the SQ, the 72-year-old suspect is expected to appear in Valleyfield court via video conference 11:30 a.m. Thursday where he could be faced with homicide-related charges and weapons-related charges.
Neighbours say Chayer and the suspect had recently moved into the house together, and weren’t really known.
