Longtime Guelph MPP Liz Sandals has announced her retirement and confirmed she will not seek re-election in 2018.
“I will continue to serve as the MPP for the riding of Guelph until the end of the term, and at the Premier’s pleasure, I would be honoured to continue to serve in her cabinet,” Sandals said in a statement on Friday. “This was a challenging decision to make because while I’m ready to be a full-time grandmother, I’ve never had more faith in Premier Kathleen Wynne and the Ontario Liberal Party.”

The 70-year-old Sandals has been in public office for 30 years and has claimed victories in four consecutive elections.
During her time in office, Sandals served as Minister of Education and is currently President of the Treasury Board.

“I also want to thank my caucus colleagues, as well as my legislative colleagues from all political parties,” Sandals added. “I will continue to value the views and contributions of every elected representative, and I’m so grateful for the friendships that I have developed with MPPs of all political stripes.”
There is no word yet on when the Ontario Liberals will choose a new candidate in the Guelph riding.
