A little flour, a little sugar, a generous helping of icing are the recipe for the Peterborough Humane Society’s latest fundraiser.
Monday, Feb. 26, marks Cupcake Day in the Peterborough region, part of a provincial movement to raise money for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) and the local shelter by selling cupcakes.
“Basically, it’s a glamourized bake sale,” said Susan Dunkley, manager of marketing and outreach at the Peterborough Humane Society.

While Cupcake Day is nothing new, Dunkley said it’s the first year the Peterborough branch has made a big push to become involved.
It’s hoping to raise $2,500; Dunkley said half the proceeds will go to the shelter, the other half to the OSPCA.
“We’re really excited to have this program that does support both organizations together because we do a lot of work with the OSPCA,” Dunkley said.

Participating in Monday’s event is easy enough. Donation boxes can be picked up at the Lansdowne Street East shelter, and Dunkley said the next step is to bring something sweet to work.
“We encourage people to buy cupcakes or bake cupcakes or Rice Krispie Squares. Throw the flour in your face so you look like you worked really hard in the kitchen,” Dunkley said with a laugh.
