Two honourary street names designated in Winnipeg may see extensions.
Mayor Brian Bowman has asked that the stretch of York Avenue between Main Street and Israel Asper Way keep its name for a further four years.
In 2013, former Mayor Sam Katz designated the stretch leading to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights with the honourary street name “Mahatma Gandhi Way” to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, one of the world’s most famous peace advocates.
The Riel Community Committee also asked for an extension for Team Jones Way, currently in place in front of the St. Vital Curling Club, of five years.

For an honourary street to keep its name for longer than five years, it needs approval from the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development, Heritage and Downtown Development.

The recommendation will go before city council sometime in March.
