REGINA – Volunteer firefighters on the front line near La Ronge had smiles on their faces Tuesday after some kind messages from youngsters.
During a break from battling wildfires, the firefighters were greeted with snacks that had been sent along with handwritten encouragement from children in the Lloydminster area.
“True heroism is not defined by success or failure, but by showing up,” reads one note attached to a granola bar. Another says, “Be strong by leaning on others.”
There were also cards and drawings sent in the care package, which proved as a welcome distraction.
“To read each one of the notes took a long time, but we all thought these kids and workers put so much time in to it we read each one,” said J.D. Salt, a volunteer firefighter based in Pilot Butte.
One note reminded firefighters to call their families – and that’s exactly what Salt, a husband and father, did.
