Summary: This new riding is a smaller version of the former Welland riding. NDP MP Malcolm Allen is seeking a third term here.
Boundaries: This riding includes most of central Welland, including the townships of Thorold, Crowland and Humberstone. Through redistribution, Wainfleet and the beach communities to the west of Port Colborne are now in the Niagara West riding.
Last Election: NDP MP Malcolm Allen was re-elected, defeating Conservative candidate Leanna Villella by 2 per cent.

Had the new, smaller boundaries been in place in the last election, the NDP would have taken it by 4.1 per cent more votes than the Conservatives (based on polling results).
History: Prior to Allen’s election in 2008, the riding of Welland had elected Liberal candidates in 22 of the previous 23 general elections, with PC MP Allan Pietz breaking the streak in 1984. However, many of those elections were close: a winner was decided by less than 5 per cent in half of the elections since 1970.
