Ottawa plans to slash costs to send steel between provinces and territories for the next year in a bid to help domestic producers hit hard by tariffs.
Transportation Minister Steven MacKinnon is announcing a $100-million rebate plan today to pay back manufacturers for half the freight costs to send eligible steel products across the country by rail or marine shipping.

The relief is meant to encourage companies that use steel in their manufacturing processes to turn to domestic suppliers rather than rely on the United States and other foreign suppliers.
Companies can apply for the rebates starting today and the program will run through to next summer or until the funding is entirely paid out.

Only products that are Canadian in origin and have a destination within the country will be eligible for the rebate.
The federal government hinted in a news release that it’s also looking into similar supports for the forest sector as U.S. tariffs and shifting global trade flows hamper Canadian industries.
@Anonoymous, in accordance to federal laws implemented (and continued by the current administration) by the last administration. The EU? Of the billions in manufactured Canadian steel, the amount exported to the EU was a rounding error in 2025.
@JVB These taxes are from Ontario, not the federal government. The ontario government implemented them to comply with trade agreements with Europe.
@Mark H. Algoma Steel paid $31M in carbon taxes in 2025 (and they have electric furnances!). Now do Accelor, Evraz, and Stelco. Then add the carbon credits that they (Accelor, Evraz and Stelco) have to purchase to offset emmissions. Cost after cost to increase prices to maintain margins. (see
@Jordan Naughton. The industrial carbon tax doesn’t even kick in for most emitters, because they trade credits, and every peer reviewed study has said the cost is insignificant. Taxes for industries like this in Canada are comparable to other G7 countries. So not sure of your point. 🤷♂️
Carney has made these industries prohibitively expensive with industrial carbon taxes, other taxes, high fuel cost etc. More “rebates” instead of solving the problems.

Sleight of hand by Carney. The trade talks are going to s**t and so he creates another focus point to redirect public attention away from his utter failure at making any substantial progress with trade talks in the US. “ Move along, nothing to see here, but look over there at that shiny new thing.”
Deals with Trump are worthless. He tears them up. He’s not trustworthy. It’s a waste of time.
Carney is right to draw negotiations out.
Shipping in Canada is more expensive because the population density is lower than the US. Fewer people, more kilometers between them.
So they are going to rebate half of the shipping for a year or till the money runs out then what. All these solutions are not going to fix the trade war it’s just costing Canadian taxpayers more money. It’s about time Carney and this Liberal government got serious about getting a deal with Trump so they don’t waste money on temporary solutions that haven’t worked so far. Why does it cost so much more money to ship within Canada than ship to the US.
