Canada and the United States are not close to signing a trade deal to reduce current tariffs and avoid new American tariffs coming into place next week, according to a sources with direct knowledge of the trade negotiations.
The distance on a potential deal comes after a week of negotiations in Washington, labelled by multiple sources as constructive, with negotiators on both sides “nerding out” and reviewing individual tariffs on a line-by-line basis.
Even then, Global News has learned, there is still a way to go before any deal could be struck.
Global News has agreed not to identify the sources because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the trade talks.
The gap on potential relief for the softwood lumber industry for now seems unlikely, with two sources with knowledge of the talks saying the Americans are not interested in reducing softwood tariffs and duties, which currently sit at close to 45 per cent.
“We face higher tariffs than Russia,” said B.C. Premier David Eby on Friday, whose province has a large lumber industry. “The U.S. for some inexplicable reason is putting forest families out of work here in order to prioritize lumber imports from Europe and Russia.”
One source told Global News, Canada has had to fight to even put forestry as a topic of negotiation.
Any deal the Trump administration is willing to sign will have some form of tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and lumber, according to sources, with the U.S. also insisting American alcohol be put back onto all provincial liquor store shelves, which multiple premiers have expressed a willingness to do if enough U.S. concessions are made.

Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who is leading the negotiations alongside Canada’s chief trade negotiator Janice Charette, is staying in Washington this weekend as talks continue.
Canada’s goal remains reaching a deal before Wednesday to avoid new 50 per cent tariffs on roughly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods from taking effect.
LeBlanc and Charette briefed Canadian premiers and the federal government’s advisory committee on Canada-U.S. economic relations on the status of the negotiations Friday evening. A statement from LeBlanc’s office did not disclose specifics about what was discussed.
If a deal is reached, tariffs on Canadian autos and parts compliant under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) would remain in place, but it is expected that they would be reduced from the current 25 per cent level, according to a source familiar with the talks. One proposal that has been discussed is a tariff rate of between 10-15% on CUSMA compliant autos and parts, according to one source.
Auto industry insiders have told Global News that they would not support any tariff level on CUSMA-complaint parts and autos, saying it would represent a major threat to the Canadian industry.
“We shouldn’t be offering any concessions to the United States right now. The reality is the U.S. has imposed tariffs on Canada,” Lana Payne, Unifor’s national president said Friday at a news conference in Brampton, Ont.

The U.S. is also seeking a change in current quota allotments for U.S. dairy that can be sold into Canada tariff-free.
The Dairy Farmers of Canada said in a statement Thursday that it is “imperative that no more concessions on dairy or supply management are made in talks with the United States.”
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer repeated Friday that the new 50 per cent tariffs on some Canadian goods are in direct response to the retaliatory measures.
Greer, speaking to reporters at the Iowa State Fair, likened the federal and provincial measures to “the kind of things that China would do.” He said those are things that would have to be resolved.
While LeBlanc and Charette have been leading the talks, one source tells Global News Prime Minister Mark Carney has made multiple calls on to Canadian negotiators, while he is on vacation in Italy.
While the Canadian government is willing to walk away from any deal, it is the preference of the Carney government to find an agreement now to avoid new tariffs coming into place on Aug. 19, according to multiple sources.
That strategy is a part of a three-pronged plan, outlined to sources briefed by the Carney government.
The first step would be to cut a deal on sectorial tariffs and avoid new ones coming into place, followed by a second step where both countries sign partnerships in areas like energy and defence.
Step three would be to renegotiate CUSMA in a more stable environment.
The U.S. opted to not agree to a renewal of the free trade pact at its scheduled review last month, despite Canada and Mexico advocating for a new 16-year term.

Are we 2 days from the biggest cow tipping mayhem the world has ever seen?
This could have ended a loing time ago wiht PP as leader negotiating a 40% accross th board tariff which beats 50%!
Dear Global News…if I feel like posting all day, I will, and you will not stop me.
A big gap remains between the ears of liberals.
The US has to lash out at former allies to distract from the fact it is losing the war with Iran. This comes after it ran from Afghanistan and Iraq. Let us also not forget their loss in Vietnam.
My wife and I often wonder how a convicted felon ever got to be President.
Well, you sure got taken to lunch based on his performance so far.
Petrodollar – I’m sure you believe that.
@So There.
The U.S. did not go to war for Iran’s oil. That is a common misconception.
They don’t need it or import it by any measurable amount.
The U.S. engaged Iran to keep the American Dollar the primary global trading currency. That is the principal reason why the U.S. is present in the region. The damage to the U.S. would be catastrophic if their currency looses that position and Canada will suffer detrimentally as well.
@Eric Smith – same difference, different dates.
No sure why anyone would interview Jean Charest about this. His opinion is worthless
@OMG.
Josh is talking about the trade “war” that Canada calls it. Lol Not about Iran.
Josh Roberts – on February 28, 2026, Trump attacked Iran. If you’ve got another definition of starting a war please share and enlighten us all.
I disagree Trump started this war. Canada was taking advantage of the relay and freeloading of NATO, Military, Intelligence. Canada is like a squatter that has now been told that rent is due or leave. Trump is merely levelling the playing field and holding Canada to account.
Canada should give no concessions as as soon as we give up our cards they will put more Tariffs in place and continue doing so. The US IS NOT TRUSWORTHY.
@Capt. Steven CVN-77 – it’s toe not tow, tariff not terrif, and the war that nobody asked for or wanted was started by YOUR president because he wanted another country’s oil. So if you are real and not a trollbot and you really are out there, YOUR guy sent you there and now he doesnt know how to get you out. There’s no off-ramp that won’t make him look like a cowardly loser so he’ll continue to drag your country deeper into the hole you’re in. You made him president and now you are facing the consequences of that decision. There isn’t another country in the world that wants to be dragged into the hole you’re in, so don’t hold your breath waiting for help.
And by the way, the tariffs came from YOUR guy. When you get back from wherever you are, maybe go back and finish highschool.
The Liberals are not interested in a deal. Carney and a lot of the Liberal MPs have their investments in the USA. Without Canada competing with the companies that they have invested in, the stock prices of the companies that they have invested in go up. They will get rich from the demise of Canada.
Canada is a weak country because of Trudeau/Carney policies the last decade. Most Albertans would rather be American as it would be better for their long term prosperity.
Americans,
1500 Zippo’s, ready to explore…….
Ring the bell, please.
No confidence in Leblanc or Canrey. They have complete mishandled this tariff situation from the beginning. Elbows Up approach does not work.
Canada needs to tow the line..
We are out here currently smashing sand N#ggers in the straight and all you can do is bicker about a few extra pennys spent on a terrif you created for yourselves in the first place.
Maybe help us out for a change?
Iran is kicking Americas ass…
I honestly can’t wait for the new Trump tariffs to hit Canada. They have been exploited the relationship will the USA and freeloading on many things Canada deserves this treatment from Trump.
@Anonymous. For Alberta, Trudeau and now Carney are the spouse that is doing the abusing, and has for over a decade.
@Anonymous. And take to court? And how many years will that take, if you ever get the money back at all. Canada has no jurisdiction in USA.
Too bad Carney and his team of partisans don’t take advice or recommendations from others. “Team Canada” is only Liberal cronies. Even his pal Lard Ford is in the dark. Carney success or failure is his own, as he hasn’t brought other perspectives in the loop. Should Carney ultimately fail, he must fall on his sword and admit he didn’t get the job done, didn’t deliver as he profiting the Election.
@anonymous below Another lobotomized Liberal that can’t see past their adoration for a loser (yes spelt with one “o” not two duh) who can’t achieve anything he promised but takes off in hiding when it comes to actually negotiating with Trump. Check your TDS and open your eyes for once in your life.
Here’s the difference;: I you sign a trade deal, it permanent. You take a 50% hit, you can take it to court, and a 50% the US manufacturers and consumer need to pay.
MAGA traitors has Stockholm syndrome. It’s like living with a wife beater dictator, but can’t separate. Let us true Canadian help you loosers and throw you out.
Put American booze back on Canadian shelves – it will sit there collecting dust. Americans don’t understand how a boycott works, just as they don’t understand how tariffs work.
@Dave from Texas – maybe fix your own country before crapping on another…and also learn to spell.
@Sad Canadian. Carney has a de facto majority. He doesn’t need help from Opposition parties. Carney doesn’t include them or ask for their input either. Carney will sink or swim on his own.
Canadians need to stop worrying about what Trump is doing and how PP is doing in the polls and more attention to what Carney and this Liberal government ISN’T doing. PP and the conservatives cannot negotiate deals with Trump that is the job only Carney and this Liberal government can do and they are failing miserably
In a way I hope that the trade talks fail and Canada is hit with 50% tariffs. Then the Elbows Up crowd would find out how reliant Canada is on USA trade. Once we have massive unemployment, our dollar crashes and we have massive inflation THEN maybe the Elbows Up people will put their elbows down.
Why is Eby surprised that the US would sooner buy lumber from Europe and Russia than Canada when the Elbows up Crowd has been denouncing everything American for over a year it’s a 2 way street if Canada won’t buy American, America won’t buy Canadian. The fact is the USA has bigger buying power than Canada on the world market which is more attractive to Europe and Russia. Canada will not get a deal by next week and the tariffs will go on and Canadians will suffer. Carney’s promises mean nothing
@Molly
You caught our attention with your excellent post.We at CLOWNS are seeking people just like you to keep the support of our Liberal Party up.You would make an exceptional addition to our team as you are obviously a natural CLOWN.Please fell free to contact us if interested.
Thanks and Elbows Up !
Dave from Texas: Your bad attitude doesn’t do any good. It’s nasty and has no place in this world. That’s why we see all the evil going on especially in the USA. I will say some prayers for you and your country . God bless
Poilievre is in hiding because he is at 18% in the polls. Wish he would support Canada in these trying times!
@Dave from Texas 32nd militia. Great representation of a US citizen. While losing the war in Iran, after running from Afghanistan and losing in Iraq, all the US has is bluster.

Mark Carney is a joke, along with Canadians..
He has done nothing about the mexican problem, you all sit back letting Iranian terrorists into your country, and don’t even get us started on your nasty negro problems…
Give yer head a shake canada.. if you don’t start finding a final solution to your immigrant problems your a lost cause and we will take your minerals by force
I see Canada’s dollar is going up.
The Liberals won’t budge on Supply Management because the dairy corporations donate big money to the Liberal Party. The Liberals would rather have Canada economically destroyed before they would give up the millions of dollars of dairy cartel’s money.
Glad Carney is in charge instead of Poilievre who is at 18% in the polls. Poilievre is a divisive politician who doesn’t have security clearance which most Canadians find abhorrent.
Carney has been a total disaster. He promised a trade deal with Trump over a year ago now. All he provides is lip service and false promises.
I find Elbows Up Canadians a bunch of entitled cry babies.
I wonder if we just closed the border and stopped buying us
How trump would respond
So glad I moved to Atlanta from Burlington back in 2018. No regrets at all. Canada has declined rapidly since 2015.
USA is the best and far superior to Canada.
Time to get rid of the supply chain management cartel and bring affordable options for hard working Canadians. Same with home and auto insurance and telecommunication services. Let competition in and force our protected elites to be more efficient.
@MAGA forever. Maybe Trump should bathe once in a while. There is a stench around him hence the moniker Diaper Don.
Canada is worthless without the USA.. always will be too!
Thank goodness trump is our leader! And thank God he is the only one willing to help with the final solution to our dirty mexican and filthy negro problems!
Trump gonna shat down Clowneys throat
We see the mini MAGA conservatives deserting this great country in the comments, and supporting Trump over Carney, just like their leader Poilievre. Disgraceful!
Thinking Leblanc with get a deal is like thinking Carney will have intercourse with a supermodel. Not happening.
Under the liberals canada has become an absolute embarrassment.
They’d rather spend money on tampons in men’s bathrooms in federal buildings and sending money to Africa and Ukraine then invest in our country and specifically our military…
Thats liberalism.
Canada has sent 26 billion in aid to Ukraine since the war started meanwhile we have the weakest military in the G7 and 2.3 million Canadians visit a foodbank each MONTH.
But hey, liberals disagree…
They believe money should go to foreigners in other countries before Canadians themselves are housed and fed.
Liberalism is a disease
Marc Carney promised to “handle” Trump and have a deal done by summer 2025… It’s summer 2026 and still no deal.
1.4 TRILLION dollar national debt that’s DOUBLED since the liberals took power.
2.3 million Canadians visit a foodbank each MONTH in Canada…highest ever in our country’s history.
Weakest military in the G7.
Only G20 nation in a recession.
Highest grocery inflation costs in the world.
Uncontrolled mass immigration.
Healthcare crisis, school system crisis.
This is what liberals keep voting for.
But but Trump! But but PP! But but Ford!
Elbows Down bozos 🤡
Carney has totally dropped the ball on this trade deal with Trump. Carney promised it to be done by July 31, 2025. Carney is a charlatan.
@Keith M. ONE HUNDRED FIFTY EIGHT Canadian soldiers died in the US war in Afghanistan. That was a war under NATO. We Canadians bravely stand up when needed.
Canada is just a parasitic freeloading country that offers zero value to it Allies anymore
@ Not from Idaho. Tells us of the Canadian participation with NATO or otherwise.
Leblanc is a total idiot. To bad Carney can’t show up as he is on “vacation “ in Italy:
Canada lives because of America 🇺🇸
@ not from idahoe. Canada doesn’t have the military or balls to stand up to any country
@Paula L. Your president imposed tariffs first. The US is losing the war in Iran, and like before, it will eventually withdraw with its small tail between its legs like it did in Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam. Canadians will enjoy the show.
Why would anyone, including Carney, agree to anything with the US as it is clear that Captain Chaos perceives the “Art of the Deal” to be a process of bully until you get your way and then bully some more. Canada should simply stand firm on the principles of CUSMA which was signed by Trump and touted to be the best deal ever. In addition, Canada should not accept any deal until all the tariffs are removed on lumber, steel and aluminum.
AS LONG AS BENDOVER CARNEY (LIBS) ARE IN POWER, THE GAP WILL ONLY GET WIDER. ZERO BALLS
USA calls the shots. Always have, always will. Since Canada became disrespectful and belligerent under Trudeau and Carney, this is now the treatment Canadians deserve. Don’t bit the hand that feeds you next time if you don’t like the consequences.
Where is our great Trump whisperer when we need him …. Oh wait, he is on vacation !!!! Good to know Carney can get the deal he promised a year and a half ago …. Oh wait, he isn’t going to do that because ….. Yes you guessed it he is hiding ….. OOPS I mean on vacation.
Personally I think tarrifs are not the way to go..
As an American I travel everyday into Canada and they are amazing people and everyone i talk to desperately wishes america would help them to remove the government and become part of america. Not only that they would love nothing more than to receive assistance in removing the scourge of rapist Mexicans that plague their beautiful country
Good the gap should remain, we don’t want American made junk. They haven’t made quality anything in years! Thank goodness for the rest of the world lol f*ck 🇺🇸
The huge chasm is between Dumbo Trump’s ears.
Time for a 50% export tax on all energy entering the United Mistakes of America.
The big gap…..that space between the Orange Idiots ears!
The LPC woukd rather respond with childishness that allows they amd their supporters to feel superior
Who cares about the economy when there are voters to manipulate
