Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has called a byelection in a southern Calgary riding for Sept. 14.
Residents in Calgary-Shaw have been without a legislature representative since May, when former United Conservative Party cabinet minister Rebecca Schulz resigned her seat.
Both Smith’s UCP and the Opposition NDP named candidates for the riding in June.
Smith, in a statement Monday, said her party’s candidate, Mike Derry, is community-minded and understands challenges that families and business owners are facing.
“He will be a strong voice for Calgary-Shaw and help us keep taxes low, keep communities safe and grow an economy that continues creating good jobs,” Smith said.

NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi said Calgarians should put their trust in his party’s candidate, Kyle Campbell, and send a message to the premier that they don’t want a government that caters to separatists.
“Albertans deserve a government focused on lowering the cost of living, jobs, and great public services like health care and education,” Nenshi said in a statement.
“Albertans don’t have to stand for this government.”
The newly created Progressive Tory Party, led by former UCP cabinet minister Peter Guthrie, is also expected to run a candidate in the byelection.

Elections Alberta says unofficial results will be shared after polls close on voting day.
The riding, created in 1986, has historically voted conservative with the Opposition NDP winning the seat only once in 2015 as part of what’s known as the “orange wave” that brought former premier Rachel Notley into government.
Smith had said last month that she would wait for summer to pass before calling the byelection, saying it was a time of year that Albertans largely weren’t paying attention to politics.
Schulz, who served as Smith’s environment minister from 2023 to the end of 2025, has become an executive with Whitecap Resources, a major oil and gas producer in Alberta, since leaving office.
Just by reading some of these comments, I shake my head. Rachel Notley and the NDP didn’t cause Alberta to have a $100 billion debt. They had nothing to do with Alberta’s debt at all. It was these phony Conservatives and Reformers who cheated us out of wealth we could have had. They did this by not collecting the proper oil royalty rates and the proper tax rates that Peter Lougheed gave us. That’s already a loss of $725 billion. Along with that, they gave us an orphan well mess that has a $320 billion cost to contend with. Plenty of other very pricey boondoogles have happened, in the form of corporate welfare, and other bunglings, which cost billions of dollars in total. By this time, deregulation of our power has a cost of $40 billion. Healthcare, education, social services were facing deep cuts, as were other important services. Infrastructure wasn’t even addressed, and that has a cost of $40 billion to rectify. Rachel Notley and the NDP inherited all this, along with a steep decline in oil prices. If Rachel Notley and the NDP were not in power, we’d somehow be rolling in wealth. All those years of the phony Conservatives and Reformers mismanaging our finances, somehow isn’t to blame. It can’t be. Unfortunately, it is.
Our roads were almost paved with gold if it wasn’t for 4 yrs of NDP Notley mismanagement, right folks?
People in this riding need to remember that Smith crossed the floor to join the Conservatives that caused the NDP to win. She only came back when the Conservatives were diseased with the Wildrose so she could become narcissist she is.
Then they need to Remember what a mess that Nenshi left Calgary in and the NDP government left the province in with the 100 Billion debt they created.
I am looking at some new political party that may help and will have to see what the new Torie party may offer as the other two parties don’t offer much at this time.

I see comments are vanishing. If you want more hardship for Albertans, choose the UCP, and if you don’t, send a message in the riding of Calgary Shaw in the by-election.
Every vote for the NDP, is a vote to lose your land titles. Just look at what Eby has done, Nenshi will do the same.
Looking at the childish insults amongst these comments, and it shows how out of touch with reality people can be.
Alberta is in this horrible mess to begin with because these phony Conservatives and Reformers weren’t collecting the proper oil royalty rates and tax rates of Peter Lougheed. That’s already a loss of $725 billion. We also were burdened with an enormous orphan well clean-up cost of $320 billion. They did other very pricey boondoogles that cost billions of dollars. Budgets for public healthcare, public education, social services, and other important things were slashed. Deregulation of electricity made the costs spike. Our highways and roads were left in such a bad shape that it will cost $40 billion to rectify. Who are people really trying to fool if they blame anyone else for this?
Just my opinion, but vote Progressive Tory Party. Send the UCP the message that we do not want to separate. We do not want private health care we do not want misinformation about natives taught in our schools (Alberta owns the land ceded by the natives, we are not on their land).
We do not want a provincial thug force. We want Alberta Wild Rose Country, where we do not have to prove we are citizens and have a health care number to prove we can drive.
Yes, yes, vote in noisy Fat Nenshi and friends. This way, the unions get more money, and we get more taxes and lots of new legislation to tell us what to do and think.
As a person that will vote in this riding it will be somewhat hard to make a decision with the political mess that we have today! The UCP really needs to distance it self from the separatist movement that has been created under their leadership. The NDP needs to get rid of their socialist ways and also their leader that is a narcissistic person like Trump and Trudeau. Not many options but I will vote as that is our rightful proper thing to do.
