SWIFT CURRENT – A Saskatchewan employer and company are facing charges for allegedly making two foreign workers pay to work for them.
Saskatchewan’s immigration ministry says a numbered company and the owner who runs the Husky Travel Centre in Swift Current are each facing eight charges.
The charges include taking unfair advantage of a foreign national’s trust and charging a fee or expense to a foreign worker for employment.
The ministry says the alleged offences happened between September 2023 and August 2025.
The owner is expected to appear in court Wednesday in Swift Current. The Canadian Press has contacted a lawyer who says they’re representing the owner, but was not immediately able to get a response.
Of the eight charges that the company and its ownership are each facing, half are being laid under updated provincial legislation on immigration that was passed in 2024.

Last week, Dhyan Jeny Enterprises, operating as Guac Mexi Grill in Moose Jaw, Sask., pleaded guilty to charging a foreign worker a fee or expense for employment.
In that case, the court imposed $7,000 in fines and ordered them to pay back the worker $12,000.
Bhavan Jaggi, a Regina-based lawyer who represented Dhyan Jeny in the case, said Dhyan Jeny plans not to take on foreign workers in the future and that the company will comply with restrictions from its franchisor.
In an emailed statement, the Guac Mexi Grill franchisor said it takes the well-being of employees in its franchise network seriously.
It says franchisees are expected to uphold company standards.
“We are reviewing the matter in the context of our franchise agreement and will determine the appropriate actions available to us,” the email said.

Criminals need to be immediately deported
This is happening all over Canada. Tcorrupt Indian lawyers are the ones who place them in the businesses. Students pay upfront 20-40k, or they pay their own wages and the owner gives them nack their money minus the taxes. All for P.R. How do ypu think the businesses woth no bisiness is staying in Business, Subway, Convience stores, etc.
Almost like companies which would rather hire temporary foreign workers than improve their positions and compensation in order to appeal to Canadians aren’t the greatest companies to begin with….. weird.
I want to know what fee they were charged for working as I am routinely charged fees to work in Canada/Ontario.
Need to pass more severe penalties where the business is seized by the crown from the owners in cases of repeat offenders or multiple victims.
A paltry fine is currently just one of the costs vs paying fair wages. Sad but true.
The government and law enforcement know this is going on all over Canada. We know it’s going on all over Canada. We know who does it and who comes here knowing it’s going to happen so they can avoid immigration laws. Most anyone could clean it up immediately by making 10 years in prison the minimum sentence then deportation if qualified. But our government and law enforcement does nothing and immigration let’s everyone and anyone into Canada.
We expect nothing less from the third world province of Saskatchewan. Our own sh!thole country right here inside of Canada.
Please explain how this any different from from all the temp work services where you pay a portion every hour you work to some agency rather then you bring it home you can’t because it equals to same thing you paying someone from your hourly wages to work like really are these Screen Ponzi scheme work services should be outlawed all the hours of scan just like driving independently for Amazon a scam lol
Welcome to Chindia, formerly known as Canada
This is common practice in BC supermarkets, Tim Hortons etc.
It happens in NB where I am located. Same racket, they have to work to pay the business a sum and in exchange the worker receives a job and the due process to immi-grate into Canada. Entire department stores and grocery stores are staffed by visible minorities. The difficulty is they don’t hire white people, thus there is a challenge to get someone inside to collect evidence to proceed with any legal action.
How widespread is this sort of thing? Some foreign workers will put up with anything to earn Canadian currency. That’s one reason why actual Canadians are frozen out of jobs in their own country.
Foreigners taking advantage of foreigners. God I love what Canada has become. I no longer need to answer my phone for someone to try and scam me 24/7
That is common in Toronto. I have encountered many students who return wages to employer just to have record of employment.
Typical Canadians
Good
No surpise given that businesses hire foreign workers because they are easy to exploit
