B.C. Premier David Eby said Canadian workers from coast to coast to coast need support now more than ever.
“Obviously we’ve seen another attack from the United States,” Eby said at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
“And again, I’m asking British Columbians, if you have a choice, please don’t travel to the United States. Choose another place to do your tourism. If you can choose a Canadian product instead of an American one, please choose it.”
Eby was at a BC Liquor Store for the press conference, underscoring the move made by the province not to stock or order U.S. alcohol for the provincial stores.
This comes after the federal government announced on Tuesday morning that counter-tariffs against more than 700 American goods amounting to $27.6 billion will go into effect on Sept. 8.
Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump said additional tariffs on Canadian automobiles, car parts and steel will take effect next year as the trade war between the two nations escalates.

“For the long term, the best thing that we can do to respond to these tariffs is to build up our workers, to build up our trade infrastructure and be less dependent on the United States,” Eby said.
He added that there are non-tariff measures that he wants Prime Minister Mark Carney to look at and potentially utilize against the United States.
“First of all, when your friend kicks you in the back, one of the first rules is you don’t then go and buy $12 billion of fighter jets from that person,” Eby said.
In addition, Eby said that significant amounts of U.S. thermal coal are exported overseas via Westshore Terminals in Delta.
“The reason it goes out of Westport is because the Americans can’t get it out of any of their own ports,” he said.
“They won’t ship it themselves. It’s something that the federal government has committed to phasing out already in 2030… I think that this is something that the federal government should be looking at as well.”

The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade’s president and CEO, Bridgitte Anderson, said in a statement that they “support and applaud the federal government’s swift action in introducing support measures for affected businesses and workers.
“These measures are a meaningful and welcome first step that recognizes the significant challenges many companies are facing.”
Anderson said that Trump has damaged one of the most successful and economic partnerships in history.

We have no intention of travelling to the States. We went to Tofino and Calgary for the summer. We just bought home appliances made in New Zealand and Germany. We are looking to getting an electric car or hybrid, and it is definitely NOT going to be a Tesla, Chrysler, a Jeep. Little things add up: We even bought Kicking Horse coffee beans instead of Starbucks.
