Prime Minister Mark Carney says the Liberals’ three byelection wins are a “clear message” that Canadians back the government’s stance in the ongoing trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.
Speaking to reporters in Ottawa Tuesday morning, Carney noted that Liberal candidates were elected by significant margins across three diverse ridings in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.
“Canadians are behind the plan of the government, which is first and foremost building strong at home, diversifying with reliable partners, building Canada strong for all,” Carney said.
The Liberals decisively swept all three byelections Monday evening, but the margins of the victories gave Carney more to celebrate than simply having three new Liberal MPs in Ottawa.
Daniel Gobeil, the Liberal candidate in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, won his seat with a nearly 20 percentage point edge over the Bloc Québécois candidate. Regis Gaudreault, the Conservative in a riding held by the Conservatives since 2015, came a very distant third – with just 12.5 per cent vote share to Gobeil’s 51.3 per cent.
Both Liberal candidates in Ontario’s Beaches-East York and B.C.’s North Vancouver-Capilano won their contests by wider margins. In North Vancouver-Capilano, Carney gets a former senior political staffer, Braeden Caley, to take a seat in the Liberal caucus.
The Conservatives, under Pierre Poilievre, were not expected to win any of the three seats. But Poilievre is likely to face renewed unrest in the Conservative movement after three uncompetitive performances.

There are very few practical paths to power for the Conservatives that don’t include a strong showing in Quebec. On Monday night, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet declared Poilievre’s party irrelevant in the province, suggesting “there are two political parties in Quebec: the Liberal Party of Canada and the Bloc Québécois.”

- Dawson college shooting survivor now serves as Montreal police officer 20 years later
That may not be much of a silver lining for the Bloc; their candidate in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, Caroline Dubé, finished nearly 20 percentage points behind the Liberal winner.
The byelections came on the heels of the collapse in trade talks between Carney’s government and Trump’s administration late last month. The prime minister has referred to the Americans’ trade actions as “war.”
An Ipsos poll conducted for Global News found that 63 per cent of Canadians backed the government’s decision to stand firm in trade negotiations with the U.S. “even if it meant higher costs and job losses.” An even larger majority, 73 per cent, supported Ottawa’s “dollar for dollar” counter-tariffs on $28 billion in American goods.
Carney was asked about Trump’s cabinet ministers’ recent attempts to ridicule Canada’s military, and Trump’s own attempt at renaming Lake Ontario.
“There’s a positive opportunity that has always existed with the United States for a mutually beneficial trade deal that respects Canadian sovereignty. But it must have those characteristics, and when the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough, and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussion,” Carney said.
“It’s not constructive.”

Canada is a swirling around the toilet. HUGE debt to come. No way to pay.
I’m not sure even the US would take us now. Who in their right mind would want California north!
Sean the truth is neither right or left. Its just the truth.
Carbon tax
GST on homes less than 1m
The planned inxrease to capital gains
Cutting the size of the federal workforce
And, taking credit for the work Flaherty did back in 2008.
Do you need more?
Right wing trolls posting comments online that are untrue, offered without context, conflating issues adds nothing at all to the conversation. They have been fed a series of bad ideas and nonsense and feel powerful repeating them. It’s so sad. The Liberals are doing incredibly well. The Conservatives have incredibly poor leadership. The NDP is trying to rebuild.
Oh well.
We can add the gas tax to the many policies that Carney “borrowed” from Pollievre, many while he was still a candidate to replace Trudeau, with parliament shuttered, Trump entering office, and we had no federal negotiators because our Ministers were campaigning in their ridings. That was the ONLY concern of the LPC in the first quarter of 2025, win the election, and the main reason why 18 months later we still have no deal with the USA.
I absolutely love Canada. There is no other place that I would rather be. Which is why we have to stand up to the U.S. and stand up for Canadians.
Marilyn Gladu, you’re in need of psychiatric help. All your posts show lack of common sense and critical thinking.
Oh, and it’s Scheer, not Scheerer. If you plan to insult someone, at least get their name right.
So why are the Liberals hiding the details of why exactly the trade negotiations failed?!?
Correction:
byelection a clear message Canadian voters are stooopid.
Pierre Poilievre gets us a continuing tax break on fuel.
Carney still hasn’t delivered on his ” grocery shelves” promise or a deal with U.S. trade
Once the consequences of this trade war hit home to Canadians, the Liberals will be in the gutter for support.
They have accomplished nothing concrete so far, nothing has changed in this Country and platitudes of pipe dreams can only go so far.
We seen it with Trudeau, and if there is one thing the Liberals have, it’s consistently to deliver nothing
Sean Webb is an anti Canadian azzhole.
Right wingers are so fragile.
@Martilyn Gladu:
Wow, you have thing for Poilievre. What’s your problem c*ward. You hate Canada that much? Leave. Get out. No one wants your kind here anyway. Go to the States where that commie will welcome you.

How close did PP come to winning any of the seats?
He’ll get skunked in the next round of byeelections too as he is a phony liar just like Andrew Scheerer who claimed to be a broker on his cards.
bwahahahaha
PP.
He was adorable at the rodeo in his whinestone cowboy Liberace gown.
Anyone who lives in a mansion free without ever having a job is a Con’s dream.
Oh look at the child having a temper tantrum and telling lies.
Carney copied Pierre’s platform, reversing taxes that he himself advised Trudeau to install. And the clapping seals praised him for it.

What are you talking about? The Liberals ran their campaign during the general election and did exceptionally well based on the strength of the leader, the candidates and their policies. Plus the Conservatives blew it under Polly. That’s not manipulation. And the Liberals did put out policies that were appealing to members of the Conservative caucus. Polly continues to fail. Bravo to the Liberals for taking advantage of Conservative leadership failures.
The underhanded way Carney manipulated his majority before gave us insight into his character. Put nothing past Carney to hold onto his majority, including election manipulation.
Purse Obsessed demonstrates poor comprehension…..again.
I am surprised. But his anti American tactics worked before. He’s a con man . His concern isn’t canada it’s Brookfield.
Win a couple of by elections and still can’t open parliament to talk to the people. At least the European Parliment will here how great he is and a new speech will come out stating how he standing up to the President with some witty remarks that do nothing for the Canadian people, but the ones that voted wanted this I guess.
I don’t think Carney could make a deal anywhere and that includes working the games for West Coast Amusements as a Carney!
Thank you for voting in the elections if you could as it at least show some people are engaged! What was the percentage of eligible voters in each of the by elections?
Byelection win clear message of liberal voters stupidity! Hahaha 🤣 heehaw yuckity yuck aooooga
I am obsessed with this board and spend all day here responding to others. I don’t understand how a public forum works.
The guy obsessed with purses really needs to find a hobby or improve his education. Maybe deal with the rage issues.
More like a a clear message about the effectiveness of Liberal election fraud.
Gord. Give it a rest. You are totally missing the point that Ben made, that I then responded to.
We are the last major country with unchecked tariffs with the USA. Other countries made genuine negotiations with the USA and settled on a path forward. Those agreements were not yet broken.
Resistance is futile! You too will be assimilated! Welcome to Carney’s Canada!
You will have all the perks of a third world country, kangaroo courts, and enough word salad to satiate any appetite! Elbows up!
All this proves is that Canadians are getting stupider by the riding.
Bring on 51
Not Ben. CUSMA and WTO are still in place and were violated by the Trump tariffs. The tariffs violated the trade agreements from the beginning, so your time frame point is actually irrelevant. You also seem to misunderstand the relationship between the agreements in place and Trump’s extortion. Perhaps you should try to understand international trade agreements before offering your comments.
Gord L “You asked for proof that Trump violated trade agreements. I gave it to you.”
I asked Ben, not you, on proof that AFTER tariffs were announced, and after agreements were then reached, that the USA came back and restarted tariffs.
You brought up a whole different time frame.
From Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The rest of us still think youre a wanker
Of course he would say that. These were safe liberal seats. These by-elections mean nothing. Let’s see what support he has when 1000s of Canadians start losing their jobs and businesses are going broke. We have record numbers of Canadians using the food banks now wait and see what happens in a few months when Canadians gave heating bills to pay.
Let’s burn Canada to the ground!! That will show Trump!
Not Ben. You asked for proof that Trump violated trade agreements. I gave it to you.

The Canadummies and elbozos have spoken, the destruction of Canadone is imminent. WEXIT ASAP from this libtarded dumpsterfire.
Propaganda won. Canadians who voted for can’t he have advertised their lack of intelligence. Sigh.
Canadians are easily fooled what bunch of nit wits
Now that elections are over can you stop posturing and get back to real negotiations.
Approval of pipelines don’t need to wait for years. same for mines ports etx
Pretty soon it will be us or them and I have no problem educating a rainbow warrior.
Lol, are kidding. 3 by-elections for a trade war??? Is your head fuked??
Ass Up assholes.
oIo
Canadians are absolute idiots. You would have though ten years of Trudeau would have wisened them up.
It’s a Carney facade.. He’s putting on a great act in order to take us into the EU. Carney never had plans to get a deal from the day he arrived. He has another agenda. Good luck to the idiots that voted for him. I hope this time next year..you still have a job. All our industry will be in the US. The EU and Canada are a pipe dream.
Carney will blather for weeks and then succumb to the USA’s wishes and tell us that its the best deal we could get. Havent seen inter provincial trade barriers lifted, pipelines PUSHED through or any mining projects confirmed. If most people here would drop their TDS interests for a day or two and due some research into what Canada has accomplished since Carney was elected then the rhetoric might actually change. Only voices of reason and quantity will get us to a self sufficient state.
Communism in Americas backyard didn’t work out for Venezuela or Cuba. Or any other country foolish enough to do it. I look forward to the end.
Gord L, no one is defending Trump’s tariffs. Your post is irreIevant.
Well it’s a clear sign that the Propaganda is working.
Yes, just like the minority mandate that gave way to influence peddling and extortion.
..as with all the other posts on here, I am asking the paid parrots how you spin this to being ‘all Carney/Trudeau, Liberals fault? Looks like PP will be on very thin ice from here on in…
There is regional support. Not the same in every province. You’re being exposed. Soon the downfall will begin. It is inevitable
@Yeah at 205 pm. Using the word retards as an insult is a vocabulary deficiency. You have an entire language at your disposal and you chose a word that screams “I peaked at 14.” What an intellectually lazy and ableist word!
It is a clear message that funded news did a great job putting the “dark cloud of tariffs” over the election.
The news did a fantastic job making Canadians forget about Carney’s horrible deal that they negotiated but were forced to walk away from because a few concessions leaked. Liberals already forgot “just put it on me, blame me”
Good job, state funded news!
Not Ben. Trump’s liberation day tariffs violated the WTO Agrrement by imposing tariffs in excess of the bound tariff rates. They also violated all other regional and bilateral trade agreements beteeen the US and its trade partners, like Canada and Mexico through the CUSMA. So the US violated its agreements with the G7 countries and pretty much every other country.
Carney (and liberals) can do no wrong in elbows up crowd minds, no matter what he does or doesn’t do… it’s always Trump’s fault. Whaaaa
We are stuck with carney for who knows how long.
The 41% voter turnout is the result of separatists not voting.
No, it does not. 2 liberal ridings going staying liberal and 1 riding in Quebec flipping is not a strong sign of approval.
Neither is retards agreeing with you.
This was the expected result.
Ben “The agreements with other G7 countries have all been broken by the USA.”
Interesting. Can you provide proof?
Damn you libturds are dumb as it gets, can’t get no dumber!
Pls someone explain the 41% voter turn out in Quebec? Just a question
And the irrelevant blither blather from the usual MAPLE MAGAts / Contards continues, lol!
What trade stance?
The voters have no idea of his trade stance and his history of compromise.
Next he will inform Buisness of the negotiations (large Liberal Buddies no small businesses) what about small businesses and the public
Now the bi elections are over there will be a deal. Last trade deal they waited for Mexico to do the hea y lifting and sighn off on it claiming it was the only remedy. The Liberal Way don’t you know. Hm
“clear message”
No, the clear message is that too many Canadians have a very low IQ and shouldn’t be allowed to vote, let alone breed.
@Katy Perry’s purse 1150am. The agreements with other G7 countries have all been broken by the USA. That’s one reason why we are reticent to come to an agreement with the USA.
The deal will be released after by-election are done.
Release the deal so we can all be on-board
I dont know what is the worse reality. Either the liberals are so corrupt they have rigged the whole system or the masses are far dumber than I gave them credit for.
There is no logical reason for the Liberals to be gaining so much power, nothing but failures and evading accountability but their support keeps growing.
Where was our trade stance in early 2025 when Justin prorogued parliament, for no reason other than to save the LPC from oblivion?
We had no federal negotiators. Ministers, the ones who hadn’t announced they weren’t running again, were busy campaigning in their ridings.
We are the last G7 country to not have an agreement with the Americans. Why is that?
