Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Wednesday that the current pause on the federal excise tax on gasoline and diesel will be extended until next February.
The extension was first reported by Radio-Canada and confirmed by Global News’ sources Wednesday morning.
The federal excise tax on gasoline was 10 cents a litre and the tax on diesel was four cents a litre but those taxes were suspended in April. The suspension was to have ended on Sept. 8.
Now, with fuel prices pushing higher because of renewed hostilities in the Iran war, the government will extend that suspension.

“Canadians did not cause these global challenges, it’s very clear. But they are feeling the consequences,” Champagne told reporters Wednesday.
“This is real relief right now. Relief for families that are commuting to work … driving their children to activities or managing the cost of everyday life, these savings add up.”

Champagne said the fuel excise tax suspension will remain in place until the end of January 2027, before returning to half its regular rate for the following two months. The tax will be fully restored on April 1.
The federal Conservatives have had an ongoing social media campaign to “Scrap Carney’s Labour Day Gas Tax Hike” for several weeks and renewed that campaign with a fresh round of posts on Wednesday morning.

We can add this to the many policies that Carney “borrowed” from Pollievre, many while he was still a candidate to replace Trudeau, with parliament shuttered, Trump entering office, and we had no federal negotiators because our Ministers were campaigning in their ridings. That was the ONLY concern of the LPC in the first quarter of 2025, win the election, and the main reason why 18 months later we still have no deal with the USA.
When it was called a carbon tax, the lying liberals and mainstream media promised us that increased gas taxes would prevent Forrest fires and not increase the cost of living. Now they are delaying the latest carbon tax elevator because the tax will make life more affordable and will not negatively impact the environment.

Diesel is what is causing super high inflation in our food system. Evert thing is trucked in refridgerated trailors. Canada needs more deisel production and a pump price of 1dollar to 1.50 to reduce food prices.If were exporting diesel it’s time to cut those exports in half for the benifit of Canadians.

Oil per barrel in 2007 was $147 USD, gas at the pump in Canada was around $1.08 CAD per litre,
today a barrel of oil costs $90 USD and gas at the pump is nearly $2.00 CAD.
What tax did they pause ? The savings are a lie, they reduce one tax and double the other and tell you they did you a favor.

Well, well, so the Conservatives and Poilievre were right about extending the pause on the fuel tax. Carney knows it is a hated tax, as Canadians have shown in polling, and so he will, yet again, take from the Conservative logical thinking and be forced to implement it.

So they should because they are doing nothing about the tariffs. They should reduce a few more taxes to make life a little easier on Canadians because the price of food is getting ridiculous and heating cost will become a factor soon for Canadians trying to make ends meet.
