The head of U.S. Pacific Command called Canada an “indispensable” partner in the Indo-Pacific and said military-to-military relations are removed from the current political and economic conflict between the two countries.
Speaking to reporters in British Columbia Wednesday, Adm. Samuel Paparo talked up the importance of Canada-U.S. military cooperation for the mutual defence of the continent’s Pacific coast.
Paparo’s comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump and his cabinet secretaries continue to attack Canada in media appearances and on social media after trade talks between the two countries fell apart last month.
“Military-to-military relationships are such a serious foundation, they’re executed without emotion, they’re executed on the facts on the ground of a requirement to defend our spaces together,” Paparo told reporters in Victoria.
“Militaries are designed to remain apolitical and ruthlessly focused on defence of the geography and the capability and the long term interests of the company. So while you do see political discussions take place, for military professionals, we’re always ruthlessly focused on the mission ahead.”
Canadians certainly have seen “political discussions take place” between the two countries over the last two weeks.

The two countries appeared close to a trade deal last month, but discussions fell apart on Aug. 21. The Trump administration accused the Canadian negotiators of altering the deal on the table in the last minute, while the Canadian government has said the U.S. brought forward a deal that differed from what was discussed.
Prime Minister Mark Carney reiterated Tuesday that the deal the U.S. side proposed included several non-starters — such as changes to French language and cultural rules, U.S. say over Canada’s trade deals with other nations, and changes that would threaten the long-term viability of the Canadian auto sector.

On Wednesday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick suggested Carney blew up trade talks in order to “gain leverage” over sovereignty movements in Quebec and Alberta.
“They treat their biggest trading partner so, so poorly,” said Lutnick, whose government has imposed repeated rounds of sweeping tariffs against Canada and other allied nations since Trump returned to office in January 2025, during a CNBC interview.
Paparo was speaking at the close of the annual Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defence conference, this year co-hosted by the U.S. and Canada.
The conference brings together senior military leadership from Indo-Pacific nations to discuss the security environment and military-to-military cooperation, and includes close American allies as well as adversaries, including China.
Paparo laughed off a question about the circumstances under which he would accept orders to take military action against Canada, given that his commander-in-chief — Trump — has openly mused about the country’s annexation.
“I find that scenario to be absolutely and utterly preposterous,” Paparo said.
“Would you ask me please also what my attack plans are for the Martians?”
Trumpkin MAGAt bots out in full force again! How very predictable, lol!
The sad thing is that Hegseth will probably fire this guy for speaking the truth, because the US is now a banana republic.
Global keeps deleteing my response…
@ anonymous Ignore everything that is said and go straight to guilt tripping Canadain’s.
I said I love and respect the CAF but they are struggling, but I say something about the U.S. and it’s immediately seen as “badmouthing”.
Legitimately, thank you for your service, but I can love my country and criticize it… You are ignorant if you think you can’t.
Let’s say your family member is struggling…. Is it loving to just say “No! You are doing great. Just look over there, someone is worse off than you… just keep doing what you’re doing as long as it’s not as bad as the other guy”
I don’t find that “loving” but maybe you do.
To AB Patriot:
“Canada has offered very little since Gulf War ” Another opinion from an ignorant person too chicken to use their real name!
My son did two tours in Afghanistan. what did you do???
Yeah…everyone knows but liberal morons.
@St 908 pm. Your country is much lower on world freedom and democracy indices than Canada. And it’s dropping further. Guess those aren’t worthy metrics to an American.
@AB patriot 734 pm. Another American who ignores the 158 brave military members who died in the Afghanistan war.
Liberal voters have made Canada a world wide liability in every conceivable metric
Canada has offered very little since Gulf War #1. Been downhill after that.
@NF. As a veteran, wanted to thank you for supporting the USA. /s Conservatives like you just badmouth this country.
@Anonymous – Keep coping. Sure our land is vast and we “protect” the Northern Border.
I use quotes because we don’t have the capability to protect anything. I love and respect our soldiers, but they are struggling in the CAF.
Canadians active force is 68,000 people.. with reserves it barely hits 100,000… (0.24% of our population)
U.S.A active force is 1.35 million people.. with reserves its over 2.1 million people. (0.62% of their population)
That is just personnel! Add in the equipment, artillery, ships, warships, aircraft carriers, oh and i almost forgot NUKES… lol
but yeah, its our land that is doing the heavy lifting.
cunada is an indispensable toilet, the fourth world needs somewhere to poop 💩

Trump has taken a rather narrow interpretation of the US/Canada military relationship by pretending Canada is dependent on them. The truth is Canada is a buffer state that protects the northern border of the USA, very similar to what Eastern Europe was to the Soviet Union. US enemies have little interest in a conflict or invasion of Canada. Canada is a huge land mass that makes it impossible to attack the continental USA from the air or ground and that keeps Americans safer than any weapon or defence system.
Really big ones
Me need big shwick.
This is a trade dispute. Never once has the NORAD relationship been threatened. The media really should portray things accurately
Fail and Lie.
He is a former Navy Admiral.
” We operate on facts”
If only the Liberal government would do the same….Trump too.
Having worked in the military, this guy was given permission by Kegseth to say this
nutlick should definitely triple his meds and re-see his all american psychiatrist…it might shut him up finally
Nutlick needs double his meds…..maybe triple.
@DennisBrady Absolutely nothing. We’re hardly a real country.
What do we bring to the table militarily that would sway any conflict?
