More than 80 per cent of Saskatchewanian households support social media limits for children and teenagers, according to the provincial government’s survey responses.
The mailout surveys were launched in May, with postcards sent to every household in Saskatchewan. The card posed a yes or no question, asking residents if they would support social media limits for children younger than 16.
More than 26,000 households, approximately five per cent of those polled, responded, according to Saskatchewan’s Mental Health and Addictions Minister Lori Carr.
“The results of those surveys were pretty overwhelming (and said) that 86 per cent of Saskatchewan residents believe that there should be some sort of social media limits for youth within the province,” she told reporters at a news conference Thursday.

Slightly more than 13 per cent said no, according to the Saskatchewan government. Of them, 68 per cent said there should be parental consent for kids to access the apps, Carr said.
A news release from the provincial government noted that the majority of respondents agreed with 16 being the cut-off age for any potential constraints.
The postcards also asked about exemptions for some specific mainstream social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and Facebook. Most households supported imposing restrictions on all, but some respondents told the province YouTube should be shielded from such limitations, it said.

Carr said the survey results have already been forwarded to the federal government to help advise them on what Saskatchewanians believe, adding that “it’s important they get the information from Saskatchewan.”
The mailouts cost the province approximately $180,000, the mental health minister added.
