A former Ministry of Social Services support worker is sharing her story calling for change in the system.
Rae Seidel worked as a child and caregiver support worker until just over a year ago when she decided to leave due to working conditions.
“We’re putting out fires, we’re dealing with what’s happening in the moment and we’re not able to do the day-to-day work that we’re supposed to do,” said Seidel.
Seidel still works in the field but is calling on her former employer to make changes so children under its care don’t fall through the cracks.

“Workers are constantly changing or there’s a vacant position and then those people either cannot contact people in order to get the kids what they need or they just haven’t been communicated to that that is no longer their social worker and it’s just such a mess,” says Seidel.
Seidel says she saw persistent understaffing, little mental health support and prolonged reimbursement delays for emergency spending on children in her care.
She says it is affecting the care children are able to receive.
“We’re not preparing the kids of Saskatchewan to be like effective contributors back to our society as they grow up,” said Seidel.

She applied for a position in a different unit and took a job in the private sector after waiting seven months to hear back from the application.
“It’s just crazy like there’s no urgency, clearly, to fix that problem,” said Seidel.
The ministry said in a statement it “implemented a number of initiatives to support recruitment and retention. This includes a focus on hiring Indigenous and northern employees and supporting psychological health and wellness of employees.
“We are seeing positive provincial results from efforts to recruit and retain frontline staff in Child and Family programs with more candidates applying, more vacancies successfully filled and improved retention rates.”
Seidel says more needs to be done to protect the children under the ministry’s care and their caregivers.
A thankless job with few and far supports. Just like all public services being stretched thin and bled dry by this government. Everyone in the comments has no idea what reality some of these people live and think the fact that they are sore after a day of work is different than seeing the worst in society day after day.
Wish there was more resources for the people on the ground doing the job, the best the government can do is spend $272 million on a failed payroll and human resources program. I wonder how much staff could have been hired for how long with $272 million. Wish we knew more about that.

My daughter is in the social worker system I’m finding it hard to get to have access they keep saying not at the moment it’s being 1 year and 3 months they also change social worker

Sounds like… a job. Like most every job.
She obviously is not cut out for this kind of work. She obviously needs her safe space and has received too many participation ribbons as a children. This is the real world and not a classroom in her indoctrination studies at university.

All you critics of social workers should know what you’re talking about before being so harshly critical. My daughter works for Childrens Aid and deals with lowlife parents who intimidate, abuse their children mentally and physically on a daily basis and witnesses firsthand the emotional stress this causes these poor kids. And she deals with far too many cases at once, as do her fellow workers to the point where she’s almost daily doing computer work regarding the cases until 11 or 12 o’clock midnight after starting the day at 8:30am. And she has 3 children of her own to raise! She has also previously dealt with a nervous breakdown because of the hours spent working and the stress of seeing what these children are dealing with. So get your information and facts before being so critical of the job these people deal with. Most of us couldn’t handle it!!

95% of all social workers are public servants that are otherwise unemployable. It is by far the most incompetent bunch of losers in the work force.
they literally perpetuate problems to maintain their jobs. They wouldnt be able to flip burgers if they didnt have these cushy jobs. The reason there is such high turnover rates is simple. These social workers only took the job to go on indefinite stress leave in the first place.
