Voters in Calgary head to the polls Monday in a provincial byelection.
A longtime Tory stronghold, the riding of Calgary-Shaw has been without a legislature member since May, when former cabinet minister Rebecca Schulz resigned her seat.
Five candidates are in the running, including Mike Derry for Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party and Kyle Campbell for Naheed Nenshi’s NDP.
Derry’s campaign has focused on affordability, education, health care and government transparency, while Campbell has made promises on health care.
Other candidates include teacher Kyle Joseph for the Progressive Tory Party of Alberta, lawyer John Roggeveen for the Liberal Party of Alberta, and Independent candidate Rolly Ashdown.

The election comes as the province prepares to vote Oct. 19 on whether to stay in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on quitting the country.
Polls open at 9 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

on smith’s orders, schultz went to bc’s coastal FNs with shallow flattery and shiny beads, hoping to convince them to get behind dropping the tanker ban.
the FNs didn’t fall for this bribery and smith showed her disappointment and displeasure with schultz , resulting in first schultz’s resignation from cabinet and then her resigning her seat in the legislature..
the tanker ban remains in place and smith was forced by carney (not trudeau) to settle for the southern route of a possible pipeline.
My prediction is NDP to win by a narrow margin and UPC second with the Torie party third. But in reality the UPC will win with a narrow margin over the NDP with the Torie party third.
Just get out and vote though and get to at least 80% of the registered voters out today. Most likely it will be at best 60 to 65% that vote.
Not much to chose from as the Narcissist Nenshi group would be worse and Smith needs a wake up call and hopefully the people vote with a thought first before they vote. A good time for the people to stand up and demand more from the political parties we have to choose from.
NDP not good due to the leader that is so narcissistic that he had to put his purple on the Signs. UCP support of separation is not good at all for any one. Other parties are small and not well known so that makes the decisions harder.
