Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said the government is “considering the options” on extending a ban on foreign ownership of Canadian residential property.
Champagne appeared non-committal when asked if Ottawa would extend the ban, which banned foreign investors from buying Canadian residential property and was first enacted in 2022.
The ban is scheduled to sunset in January 2027, just months after the expected tabling of the Liberals’ next budget.

“That’s a measure … that has been in place for some time. The market is evolving,” Champagne told reporters on Wednesday.
“We’re looking at all the options that we have in front of us, considering where the market is going, what has happened over the last few years, always keeping in mind that we want to make sure that we have a higher stock of housing opportunities for Canadians.”

The previous iteration of the Liberal government noted in 2024 that foreign investors have been buying up residential real estate, which Ottawa said was “increasing housing affordability concerns in cities across the country, particularly in major urban centres.”
The government at the time extended the ban, which was originally set to expire in January 2025, for an additional two years.
Canadian real estate should be for Canadian citizens and those with PR. This shouldn’t be difficult.
Nothing says better to foreign investors than your money is not welcome here when you can’t buy house in Canada when they considering investing here
Will they sabotage the progress they claim to have made on housing cost and rents…probably.
Simply put, this is sort of a competition between generation Z, that’s me, and the older generation. The older generations don’t want to see their house prices stagnate or fall because that’s a huge investment for them. Younger generations want prices to stagnate or fall. The middle ground, if the government can manage it, is stagnation. Also I would need to see the arguements as to why foreign buyers should be allowed to buy residential properties before saying we should prevent them from buying.

Renew the ban!!!!!
Keep the foreigners away and immigrants too

Killing the Real Estate Market?
Too many empty properties listed with no buyers?
The Liberals will not extend it because it has placed to many constraints on their Chinese business partners coming here reap all we have to offer. Of course the Liberal Party Executives are their business partners.
Did you Liberal supporters learn! nothing from the appointment of Dominic Barton?
Unbelievable they’re even considering this knowing how unaffordable housing already is. No one actually trying to fix the housing situation would even consider this move.
All of you that are for extending it will reap what you sow , I would suggest to let foreigners buy real estate but wit the condition that they don’t stay empty . What they are doing now is killing the real estate market .
Why are foreign entities allowed to own residential in the first place? I am not talking landed immigrants or PR or even Joe Smith from Arkansas buying a summer residence or any like thing, I am talking about XYZ holdings from Hangzhou China and the ilk. They have NO business owning ANY residential properties in Canada. If they want to put up their executives, they can rent or pay hotels. Consider it their cost of doing business in Canada.
Liberals need to be remove from every facet of our society no matter their station.
We need a revolution that replaces the current hierarchy with a competent new one by replacing the leadership at defiant businesses and defiant politicians with ones neither eager for the apocalypse, nor expecting one is imminent.

Maintain it until a leader smarter than all of Liberaldum comes along.
No foreign ownership unless the named buyer (not a relation or child) lives in the property for at least 9 months of the year.
Vancouver is totally unaffordable due to Chinese foreign ownership.
Foreign investers contributed to crazy price increases that still exist today. Most working class families can’t buy a home, and those that do struggle on high mortgage payments.
First off, you shouldn’t be allowed to buy a home here unless you’re going to live in it. Houses being bought as rentals, and homes being bought up by house flippers are a large reason why homes are so unaffordable today.
Extend it.
