The Cold Lake First Nations has filed an application for judicial review in Federal Court challenging Ottawa’s decision to designate the Pacific Link pipeline a project in the national interest.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced last week the pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia would be fast-tracked under the Building Canada Act.
The goal is to complete the required reviews and consultations over the next year so construction can begin next September.
Get breaking National news
Cold Lake First Nations Chief Kelsey Jacko previously told The Canadian Press his community was left out of consultations for the pipeline designation, despite his community being situated in the oilsands region.
The Assembly of First Nations has also identified “many red flags” in the pipeline’s national interest designation and says the federal government appears to be predetermining outcomes and approving projects in advance of meaningful consultations.
Prime Minister Mark Carney promised his major projects agenda would not interfere with Canada’s obligations under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

And this is why private investors are no longer interested in investing in Canada. It took 13 years just to get the shovels in the ground for the LNG Kitimat to be built due to consultation after consultation, round table discussions and a massive waste of money for this to happen. If they had not already invested billions into the project, they would have pulled their entire investment out. When the cash runs out, where is the additional money to pay FN? Canada will just borrow another billion or two. And Canadian taxpayers will be on the hook for it. I actually do have a vested interest in this. I live in Fort McMurray and have for many years.
Of course they do. Canada is broken.
What does the cold lake first nation have to do with the pipeline in the first place? It’s land isn’t even close to where the pipeline is going. Anybody think of this?
So, there’s not going to be a pipeline cause?
JJ, wake up out of your coma loser!
So what happens if FN are successful in blocking every project in Canada? What happens when Canada runs out of money because FN block everything? Where will FN get their income from?
Just wipe the chugs out.
No wonder Saskatchewan is sending their potash across the line to ports there. Canada sucks.
It will take 10 years to approve, speeds we have never seen before!! What a joke
Understanding the Treaties is key!
All you racists on here, imagine if the US invaded Canada and took control of everything. Then the US segregated all Canadians into a separate box under the Canadian Act. All Canadians are given a Canadian number (ala Treaty Number) to identify them. As a consolation measure, the US signs Treaties with the original 40 million Canadians promising a share of their original wealth, to live comfortably on. It’s a “don’t worry we’ll take care of you”promise. Then the US puts in place policies to eventually exterminate all Canadians. And the promise of wealth sharing never materializes but the Canadians are given a pittance under the Canadian Act to live in poverty on.
Then the Canadians are forced to go to the US courts to continuously argue for their “Canadian rights” for a share of their own wealth as promised by the Treaties they signed with the US.
This is how the Indian Act operates in Canada today. Do you racists on here get it???
Amazing how these clowns can’t provide proper housing or decent drinking water for their people but seem to have oceans of cash to hire lawyers to launch frivolous lawsuits. This reserve in nowhere near the proposed pipeline route snd not even close to any islands production site. But I’m sure some Trudeau appointed judge will agree with them. Canada is a dysfunctional mess
Pretty damned demanding for a group of parasites that contribute absolutely nothing to society except grief.
Very tired of being held hostage but the native groups, if they dont support the new projects that bring in money to support them cut they payments dollar for dollar!
Look at those war bonnets and suits. Cowboy boots as well! Yet they stand there, arms crossed and defiant. Steal our culture, throw it back us we are stealing theirs. I DONT DRESS IN INDIAN CLOTHES!!
Blame me I hurt your children and take your way of life. F*CK YOU! I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!
Go back to your fancy house and vehicle chief wacko jacko! Omg these chiefs are really something! Maybe your people should ask for a duty to consult with all of you about why you all love the good life and you keep them living with nothing!
“Meaningful consultations” = Show us more money! These chiefs are ridiculous, enough is enough already! It’s like Groundhog Day, over and over again. End allll the idiotic nonsense ~ “Duty to consult”, land acknowledgments, billions for lies about bones, gladue reports, etcetcetc
consultation means you talk about something….not needed to give your okay.
EHAT A BUNCH NONSENSICAL.PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIKE PROGRESS, WHITES OR COLONIZATION OR HELPING A COUNTRY ,and the people and you unite instead of dividing BUT DO BENEFIT?? Then do what you tell those who are not Indigenous to do. Leave Canada and go back where your ancestors (now mixed) came from (wanderers)!!
Sorry “chief” The answer is NO, also WE DON’T CARE, also STOP BEING GREEDY & SELFISH, also work on helping your people! These chiefs are always shady as hell! Just looking for more $$$$$$$ for themselves and not caring about their people! Please First Nations people, vote for a sovereign Alberta so this nonsense can end and
everyone can have a better future
All the chiefs made it clear they are elbows up . Now pick a f side !! Enjoy having your Treaty land controlled by the European union
@ try this,
Well said but in reality no one is listening to that part of the conversation as there is no political gain in try to uphold what the treaties actually say.
It would be nice to see the First Nations people actually hold their own leadership to account. There are being held back to advance as Canadian citizens by their Chiefs and leaders because there is political power in using the sorry us rhetoric to get more money that does nothing to help the First Nations people get out from living in the conditions that they live in because it is wasted and there seems to be no consequences for the waste.
Ben: look at how much we have given the natives. The treaties specifically state that natives are not to hinder business. As such, we should cut off all the treaty right money (and all the extra money) until they follow the treaty.
Maybe Global should do a piece on how much the natives should get as treaty rights, and how much they are being given by the Liberal government. – You know, the ones who snuck the ‘duty to consult’ into our constitution, the ones who just gave millions for Sask natives to raise each others children. The ones who gave away ownership of pipelines and lumber mills. – Do you know where the natives get the money to pay their Chief and Council? We give it to them, as a bonus as it is not a treaty right. Maybe that should stop.
The First Nations should be consulting their own leaders and find out where all the money has gone and why they still live in such terrible conditions on some reserves. It is their leadership that is failing them and not the federal government.
Until that starts to happen I am sorry but people will continue to look down on the First Nation peoples across Canada due to their leadership not taking care of there people. Similar to what the rest of us have with out current governments across the country. Cost of living going up everywhere and no provincial or federal government doing a thing to lower it other than blaming Trump for the raising costs.
Taking off the gas taxes has done nothing to help and the welfare handouts from the government to buy groceries did nothing to help and the current Prime Minister should be embarrassed. Has not followed up on any election promise that he told Canadians he would do. Then did back door deals to get an unelected majority to push his ideology!
So sick of hearing the aboriginals whining again . Odd how in B.C the aboriginals got 51% ownership in a natural gas plant and saw mill, weird.
I wish Carney stands up to the Indigenous and hands out shovels and hard hats instead. A job. Work. Not welfare. We will see.
Shocking News ! Indigenous Tribes Demand What’s In It For Us. What that means is pay us off or we guarentee nothing will pass, get built or advance.
My people always want money. It’s all about money. No wonder Alberta wants to leave the country lol
The Supreme Court has ruled we have a duty to consult in the past. This does not mean we can run roughshod over the rights of First Nations peoples. It also means no one party, be it First Nations, environmentalists or whomever, have a veto. Further there is overwhelming political support for the pipeline. Just get it done.
We need to respect First Nations peoples, and that can be done via the duty to consult. I once opposed more pipelines but we need to realize several things. Firstly, if the oil doesn’t come from Alberta, it will likely come from some dictatorship or a pseudo fascist regime like the USA. Secondly, the pipeline is urgently needed for national unity. Thirdly, we can use this pipeline to help reduce our reliance on the USA. Finally, it will bring economic growth and tax revenue to our country. This tax revenue can be used to give First Nations peoples a step up, and for social programs.
Do we not have the capacity in Canada to make our own laws, why do we need to abide by some United Nations declaration that does nothing but attempts to extend a veto to Indigenous people. Enough already.
Carney doesn’t want to build the pipeline anyways. He is totally into his green fantasies.
What now? Just another excuse to get money? We have enough of cocainesky popping in every few months looking for a handout.
With all of the money given to First Nations, the members would all be wealthy.
The question now is will Carney stand up to the freeloaders, or will he cave as he seems to always do?
Just ignore the chugs. What can they do??
And there it is – the excuse Carnage will use to kill the line!
How the phuck did they even get there?. walk, ride horses?. No, they used the new ways. As they always do when its convenient for them. This victimhood culture has to stop.
And here we go folks. The natives are in first place with their hands out but Carney is close behind with excuses. Following him is the leftists who cannot stop anyone else from passing and bringing up the rear again is the taxpayer. This race always ends the same.
F OFF INJUNS!!!! Go back in the Forest & stay there!!
OD already you waste of skin fcks!
Jen o side
Time for war
What do these chiefs even know about ‘national interest’? They can hardly manage their tiny ‘nations’ properly.
This will be the first of many announcements like this. Project will be tied in the courts for many years and after a few more consultations and a few Billion of taxpayers money given away the pipeline will be built at a cost of three times as much with no profits coming back to the taxpayers. May be built by 2030 at best if at all!
Phuck First Nations.
This is why we can’t have nice things.
Alberta out!!!
All part of Carneys plan to kill all new pipelines. He will pretend to support while also allowing special interest groups like FN to get in the way. All deliberate.
