BC NDP leader David Eby revealed over the weekend that his family has benefited from the province’s $10-a-day childcare program.
Global News asked the question on Monday morning on the campaign trail and Eby said one of his children is part of the program.
The program was started by Eby’s predecessor John Horgan in partnership with the federal government under former prime minister Justin Trudeau and despite growing demand, Eby’s government announced a three-year pause on expanding it this past spring.
That comes as many across B.C. still struggle to find affordable daycare spots.
Advocates say B.C. continues to be the most expensive province for child care, with many parents paying between $40 to $100 a day. Only 10 per cent of B.C. childcare spaces are dedicated as $10 a day.
In response to the criticism, Eby says his child was at the daycare already before it was designated as $10-a-day.

When asked on Tuesday morning, Eby said his family “donated the difference” to the childcare provider so that other families in the area could benefit.
Later, the BC NDP told Global News that Eby’s family has donated $3,200 since mid 2024 for a total of eight months’ enrollment, meaning a monthly donation of $400.
They say the family intends to donate a further $4,800 at the end of this year.
“My focus is to make sure British Columbians benefit from affordable child care,” Eby said.
“That’s why we put it into the agreement with the federal government so more British Columbians could benefit; that’s why we’re expanding before and after school care. And unfortunately, and perhaps because of their total disinterest, frankly, historically, and continuing in young families, the Conservatives are proposing to cut that program.”

In a statement issued on Monday, the BC Conservatives did not state they would cut the program, but did call the admission from Eby “shocking.”
“Nobody begrudges David Eby and his wife for their success,” Margareta Dovgal, Conservative Party of BC candidate for Vancouver-Yaletown, said in the statement.
“The Conservative Party of BC wants more British Columbians to succeed. What families will not accept is a Premier who promised them $10-a-day child care, failed to deliver it, and then took one of the scarce spots for himself while a single mom working two jobs sits on a waitlist.”

These high income individuals especially in public office should be charged with some fraudulent offence when targeting programs intended for struggling families. He has used a program that was intended for struggling families and single parents and has prevented a needy child from getting a spot in the daycare. He has a salary over $220,000 and his wife earns a good salary so he should be excluded because of the following:
– He is the premier of BC
– His family income in in the top percentile of salaries in BC
– His use of a spot in the daycare prevents a needy family from accessing the daycare $10 a day program
– Even though he says he made a “donation” to the non profit daycare, he can claim that on his taxes
– The optics of his use of the daycare is terrible
– The program of $10 a day daycare has been paused by his government meaning that needy families cannot apply and yet he still takes a spot.
– Eby is using the BC taxpayer funded program that wasn’t intended for his family but for struggling BC families.
He should not be allowed due to his position as premier and make over 2 – 3 times as much as middle class does. Plus based on amount should be 4 – 500 a/month for daycare.
I am not a fan of Eby but I don’t get why he is being hounded for the $10/day when his child was there before the daycare subsidy was in place? Another thing I don’t get is why an affluent area such as Point Grey even has subsidized daycare centres. This $10/day daycare is just peanuts. Andrew Scheer (Conservative Party) did far worse: billed the Conservative party for his kids’ private Catholic school, private security, an extra housekeeper, his minivan and clothes for his family. Andrew was living off the skins of the Conservative Party and we can only guess where that money was siphoned from. The Conservatives are terrible group with the infighting, among other things behind the curtains. Now the question is, who is the lesser of the evils? It is insane that we are still talking about the $10/day from Eby. Let it go and focus on the important things that matter.

Donating money doesn’t open the spot for someone in need. If he wants to make a difference, give up that spot and fight to open more spots for the people who really need it.

Why is an affluent neighborhood with homes worth $2-$15 million getting a $10/day daycare facility? These spaces should be in median and low income neighborhoods where its needed most, not in neighborhoods where theres 2 income earners each making more than $200k a year. Its extremely frustrating that if only 10% spaces are available that they are hitting affluent neighborhoods first. It shows a serious lack of leadership in making life more affordable for those who need it and proves we need a leadership change. This is happening in west vancouver as well, another neighborhood that doesnt need it. Sick of government helping the wealthy with taxpayer money. Where’s the oversight?

This is grossly mis-managed taxpayer dollars. The eligibility should be not for the daycare but based on a family income basis. Even if the daycare became eligible after he was there, it was his government that approved it and he knowingly took advantage of it until he got caught. Is this who should be leading our province!
