On Monday, Albertans vote on whether to stay in Canada or hold another binding referendum on quitting Canada.
If the vote goes as polls suggest, a majority of Albertans will mark an X to stay in Confederation, and Premier Danielle Smith has said if that’s so, she expects everyone to accept it and move on. Leaders of the independence movement contest that.
And political watchers are divided about whether separation — previously a fringe sentiment — will now be a prominent, permanent feature of Alberta’s political landscape, as in Quebec.
Julian Castro-Rea, a political-science professor at the University of Alberta who studies the separation debates in Quebec and Alberta, believes as long as Alberta feels alienated from the Canadian capital — feeling that Ottawa benefits from Alberta’s resource economy without giving back — the movement will have fuel.
“Even if the referendum is lost, the westernization will still be around, because it’s kind of a way which, traditionally, Albertans have related to the rest of Canada,” says Castro-Rea, who believes western alienation may remain indefinitely.
Alberta’s independence movement has been compared to Brexit and separation in Scotland, but the most obvious comparator is Quebec.
Earlier this month, Quebec elected a minority government led by the Parti Québécois, which has promised to call a third independence referendum to leave Canada, following votes in 1980 and 1995.
Experts say the two provinces differ in their catalysts for secession. Quebec and its francophone culture have developed over centuries. Alberta, by comparison, was created alongside Saskatchewan out of the division of the Northwest Territories in 1905.

Alberta’s separatists are driven by western alienation rather than a deep-seated nationalist sentiment, like Quebec, experts say. That means it’s difficult to see how the long-term future of the movement could pan out.
“They have different identity, different history, different language, as you know, and therefore they can claim, kind of, this historical legitimacy as the basis for their attempts for separation,” Castro-Rea says.
Separatist sentiment has been sprinkled into Alberta’s saucepan for the past half-century before coming to a boil in recent years. Premier Smith, who has voted to stay in Canada, has repeatedly criticized former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s policies as oppressive to Western Canada’s sovereignty and its energy-driven economy.
That criticism has softened against current Prime Minister Mark Carney, who referred to Alberta’s bid for secession as a “dangerous bluff” on Thursday night. He also said a decisive result would “settle this question.”
Andrew McDougall, an associate political science professor at the University of Toronto, says he sees Alberta’s referendum as a way to garner political leverage with Ottawa, as Quebec has.
“This has sometimes been referred to in Quebec as the ‘knife at the throat strategy,’ where Quebec could sort of push its agenda because we’ve had that incredible threat of a referendum,” he says.

But former UCP premier Jason Kenney, speaking in Edmonton earlier this week, said the knife analogy cuts both ways.
“The idea of making the threat by holding a knife to the throat of the federation is how you end up as a have-not province, like Quebec, instead of the ultimate have province like Alberta,” he said.
“You want to talk about a lack of investor confidence? The next year, moving towards an actual vote on separation when the first one is won — the economic consequences would be catastrophic.”
Political science professor Graeme Young says to understand Alberta’s future, one could look at Scotland.
Young, at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, grew up in Ontario and kept interest in Alberta’s prospective separation from afar as Scotland bolsters another push to leave the United Kingdom.
He says he doesn’t expect Alberta’s separatist campaign will last. He believes the movement could deflate with a different federal political party in power. And he says it can’t draw from the same wellspring of national identity as exists in Scotland.
Young says Scotland’s 2014 campaign was, in large part, defeated by uncertainty about the economics of independence, including pensions, currency, finances and its role in the European Union.
And while Scotland has been preparing for more than a decade for another run at independence, Alberta’s movement is underprepared, Young says.
“(Alberta’s case) has been put together quite hastily,” he says. “It does not seem that they have invested as much time and energy into that case as one would expect for setting up a new country.”

The following points need to be stated concerning the Alberta vote of this date.
– Aninteresting point I have noticed is the twisting of Premier Smiths constant messaging that she is pro Canada. I have watched her say these things from the beginning. So why did Danielle Smith allow this to happen, why did she not punish the separatist people right at the beginning you ask? Because that is the socialist response to dissension. What Danielle gave Albertans was the holist of holies in democracy. The right to vote on the matter, but most of the Haters are ignoring this. Personally, I appreciate that this came to a vote and we are allowed to actively participate in the resolutions. This is much better indicator to what Albertans want then some suspicious polls that seems to provide the answers the commissioners of said polls support. Votes like these tend to frighten socialists to ‘death’. Democracy is just a tool to get power, and then it is discarded
– The Media coverage has not been very balanced. Lots of pro-Canada stuff, not much (other than negative) about the pro separatist camp. The actual vote has been rather miss-represented in that this is not the vote to leave Canada, other than to start the talks with the Federal government. Then Albertans will vote on leaving or not after this process is complete.
– Another interesting item I have noticed is that while there was lots of talk by the media and ‘talking heads’ on the costs of separating and setting up a sovereign state, I have seen very little of just how many dollars in taxes, royalties, and fees comes from Alberta to pay out to the rest of Canada in the form of equalization. Comparing the out flow of dollars to what actually comes back.
– This vote keeps the issue of Alberta/petroleum industry abuse on the table. If Albertans vote No today, then how fast does the Federal government go back to ignoring one of their primary revenue sources? In fact, get back to the favorite Liberal pastime of ‘winding down’ or taking control (like in Newfoundland) of the Alberta petroleum industry.
– The Federal government on all party sides has a long history of looking covertly at the petroleum industry and while providing short terms of patronizing to us here, they prefer the socialist model where by Ottawa controls all aspects of Canadians lives. They look at Alberta as peasants that need to get back to work, pay those taxes, do as we are told and ‘shut up’. This Ottawa usurping of control is really the base of the other questions. Ottawa allows who they want into Canada, then leaves it to the provinces to fund everything. Time to revisit that concept.
– But the most import issue here is regardless of what sides you support, get the ‘ell’ out and VOTE. We are lucky to still have this ability. Do not ignore it.

There will always be stupid people.
Just so you know it’s not boomers that destroyed canada, GARBAGE comes in ALL age groups, all colors, rich and poor, dumb and smart, working class, simple servants, just my one cent that I saved from a bygone era
@154, hate to be bearer of bad news but canada is UNFIXABLE, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see and know that, but keep wearing same rose colored glasses you’ve had on for 11 years!
Usa and big oil is the cause of all inflation not the canadian government. Smith is inline with usa, big oil. Blame her, seperatists.
Hey anonymous, before you blame all the boomers, have a lot at eastern Canada, their political power created this mess,do you they they will give it up,not a chance in he’ll. We’ll be right back at the bottom of cesspool with eastern Canada in control.
If you don’t want to be part of Canada then move! I’m in BC and seeing my Albertan cousin’s posts about leaving Canada are making me not like him. Kind of how I feel about anyone else that wants to bail on Canada. If you don’t like it, fix it. It’s not your marriage. It’s OUR country.
All this separation fuss is a waste of time. Canada’s economy will continue to go down to the point that Canada will not be able to pay government workers for basic services. Once roads fall apart, doctors move to the USA leaving us with an even more disfunctional health care system. When sewage starts running on the streets. Canadians will be begging the USA to make us the 51st state.
It will be the end of the seperation movement? No. Canada is not going to get better. Food prices, housing prices, energy prices, inflation will still keep going up. More and more people will get fed up with Ottawa and their policies and more people will consider separation. Mainly because Alberta is sitting on trillions of dollars of petroleum that Ottawa restricts Alberta from developing. Also just because we had a referendum this year there is nothing, no laws, stopping people from petitioning for a referendum two years from now.
go witn USA or sepeatte .. rest of the canada is fucccc d by immigrants
The NDP will never be in power in western Canada ever again. LOL
Nothing more pathetic then the elbows up boomers. The most selfish entitled azzholes that lived .so ignorant They don’t care about how they destroyed canada . Because the only thing to them is thair opinions . Who cares about the next generations . They don’t have to get a job .or buy a home . Or care that the county is packed full of immigrants turn it into a third world county . Or the poor Healthcare system. Only if it effects them . Even to thair last breath they will suck the Healthcare system dry . You people start this mess . You need to stand out of the way let the next generation make the decision if alberta should stay
The seppies need to go live in the U.S. but there is no way that they are keeping our territory.
That fun reminder of that time, in France, when the population realized that the powers that be only fostered support for those that didn’t need it, over those that did, and they just lost their heads they did…

By running short on time, one could potentially refer to the cost of groceries vs their willingness to eat humans.
Not me, obviously. But they are out there and I have no doubt they are hungry.
Lmfao. Yeah Gen Z, like the Quebec Referendum ended the debate.
You do not deserve to carry the torch that represents humanity.
You are ignorant. And when I say that, I do not mean you lack knowledge of Taylor Swift.
What I mean; is that you lack basic survival skills because you had to make room for your obsession with Taylor Swift, or some other meaningless knowledge that somehow severed your link with survival.
Your time to smarten up is running short…
smith is not perfect yes she’s made mistakes but at least she noticed and allowed this referendum unlike your other premiers that don’t believe in democracy the entire reason problem started with your liberal government with Trudeau destroying Canada then in election time the west does not count because of the lack of seats. as long as there is a liberal government Canada will continue to go into the toilet .the only way out is separation with or with out smith
S Harrison is right on point. Smith is claiming about wanting to stay in Canada, then tries to say she wants Alberta to be Sovereign. At least most of us understand the non-issue. Smith just wants to be Queen.
The natives have their knickers in a twist because, if we separate, Alberta will honour the treaties, but the gravy train of the Liberals giving them everything will end.
The BC Conservatives are running on the platform of getting rid of DRIPA. Would a federal party please run on the platform of getting rid of UNDRIP and section 35? Canadians want their country back.
Smith becomes Premier and starts the crying about how bad Ottawa treats Alberta which creates the separatist movement within the Wildrose base she was the leader that crossed the floor to stay relevant.
Tours the province for some town hall meetings to appease the Wildrose base and creates more division by flopping over to immigration that is causes all the problems which she herself wanted to bring up the population to 10 million.
Now she “votes” to stay in Canada but still wants to win the racists questions and win the anti Ottawa questions so her Wildrose bases stays happy!
So please get out and vote but once the results come in let’s get this Province back in shape and start working for the majority and not the separatists as this is their 15 minutes and it is time to start uniting the province instead of the divided one we have now.
Totally agree, S Harrison
S Harrison sounds like you got your panties in a bunch. You need to grow up ! So to fix your rant about Smith is to have complete liberal control. Let them flood alberta with another 10 million east indians .cause high inflation build AI data centers all over alberta sucking up all the water and natural gas all for carneys Brookfield.then continue to have albetas revenue taken away to sent to support corrupt counties. Well f u !!
This so called referendum is not about Alberta separation. It is about Smith maintaining power and making a name for herself. She must bow to her base. She plays ignorance when it’s convenient and talks out of both sides of her mouth. She doesn’t give two figs about Alberta. Has life been getting easier for average Albertans? No. She made the campaign, to call and pay other Canadians to Alberta and asked Ottawa for more immigrants to arrive here. Hmm, there was not enough social infrastructure to accommodate these people. For example, school and hospital services are failing Alberta. Her solution was fund private schools and instead of stream lining and hiring for the essential services at the hospitals, most of the funding is to restructure for privatization. Now, she blames immigrants for our woes. Seriously folks, this fake seperation talk is to divide Alberta. So while we are busy and invested, she is conquering. Please pay attention people. Don’t forget the real issues at hand.
Smith is a hot looking lady . Even for her age yummy !
ALBERTA WILL SEPARTE does it hurt you bunch of liberal azz holes?
Smitler’s up for the ugliest liar award.
Free Alberta!
wow, morrigan and i must be about the same age….yes, i remember those seppie bozos in olds/didsbury electing gordon kesler to the leg.
in tghe following general election the voters booted him out. he was one of those gr 8 dropout oil guys totally ignoring the leg rules and being the laughing stock of the place.as the saying goes: you can take the boy out of the boonies, but you cannot take the boonies out of the boy.
i bet there is not a single other premier who has respect for smith.
Re: Albertan…. I’m guessing by yours & American enemies, you mean any non-white, non-christian. Tends to be the view of many far right Cinservatives who currently would love to join the US during its Trump era.
Separating is easy peasy, once done USA will help us build up a military to protect against our ENEMIES!
She will do anything to keep this going…
No wonder the mainstream media has such a bad reputation!
Alberta is going no where, it is always going to be part of Canada!
Quebec cannot afford to leave, Alberta can and that is the difference between the two provinces.
Alberta isn’t separating and Danielle Smith and the UCP are traitors.
An awful lot of whining simply because citizens were given an opportunity to officially voice their opinions
Canadians get more pathetic by the day
I condemn you on this interview with Brooke. Jeffrey, regarding our votes, our premiere talk about one-sided. I am so disappointed with global news. You seem to be jumping on the bandwagon of the government consensus that you don’t report properly. You’re not for the people anymore. I’m disgusted with most of your reporting. I will not be watching global news anytime in the future. You’re just useless
Smith CLAIMS to have voted to stay in Canada, but at the trate she has been lying to Albertans and the rest of the country, don’t believe her.
The separatists should form their own party, along the smae lines as the Western Canada Concept in the early 80s…..a regional party including SK, northern BC.
In 1982 that party elected a member to the Alberta Leg.
In the same rising just a couple of years ago, in a by-election, the separatist candidate came in THIRD, after the UCP (first) and second place NDP.
Those convoy gangsters have raked in enough money from the suckers to finance their own party.
Already campaigning “this is the end”. Nope. Carney reneges or the country continues to swirl and cue the next set of petitions. Make changes Canada, or else.
Global hurling the horse biscuits today. The issue will only be settled when we separate.
They’ve been whining and complaining since 1905!!! Why would…..how can they possibly stop now?! Its in their DNA. For kripes sake….they had a ” freedom convoy” about nothing!! ( except there own freedom from their own dysfunction)
