An advisory group that’s supporting a federal review of firearms classification — including a look at the SKS rifle — is expected to hold its first meeting this fall, almost a year after Ottawa announced the review.
Public Safety Canada says members of the Firearms Classification Technical Advisory Group, appointed to provide expert advice to the department and the RCMP, “will be meeting later this fall.”
The Liberal government has faced fresh questions about the SKS after a document filed in a U.S. court said the killer in the Tumbler Ridge, B.C., mass shooting talked about having an SKS gun.
Eighteen-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar killed eight people in the Feb. 10 Tumbler Ridge attack before taking her own life.
The RCMP has declined to release details about firearms used in the shootings, saying its investigation is ongoing.
The SKS has been used in police killings and other high-profile shootings.
It is also commonly used in Indigenous communities to hunt for food.

Prime Minister Mark Carney recently indicated the government would look at the advice of the classification advisory group before making any decision on the status of the SKS.
Since May 2020, Ottawa has outlawed approximately 2,500 types of guns on the basis they belong only on the battlefield. It has not banned the SKS.
Gun control advocacy group PolySeSouvient has long called on the government to impose an immediate ban on new sales of the SKS, to remove from circulation modern, assault-style versions of the rifle, and to implement a voluntary buyback of older models. It calls for an exemption for Indigenous hunters who use the SKS primarily for sustenance.
In early December last year, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said the government would “shortly be launching a comprehensive review of the firearms classification regime” with an emphasis on simplicity and consistency.
“This review will be supported by an expanded advisory group, and will involve dedicated consultations with First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, including on the SKS, to ensure Indigenous perspectives and traditions are an active part of the process,” he said in a statement.

“The review will take a broad view of the legal framework for firearms, devices, magazines and ammunition to modernize the regime and ensure Canadians’ safety.”
In response to questions this month from The Canadian Press, the Public Safety Department said more information on the Technical Advisory Group and on engagement activities related to the classification review will be made available “in the near term.”
“Members will bring diverse technical knowledge, experience, and expert views from a wide range of perspectives,” the department said.
PolySeSouvient said this week that instead of implementing a comprehensive ban on assault-style firearms and high-capacity magazines, “the government keeps announcing new consultations and panels, and each one becomes another reason to postpone actual change.”
“Lives are at stake,” the group told The Canadian Press. “The government needs to stop consulting and start acting, before more people are killed in mass shootings.”
In a recent commentary on its website, the Canadian Shooting Sports Association said many questions remain about the Tumbler Ridge shootings, including which firearms were used, how they were obtained, and which — if any — had been seized by police previously.
“Reclassifying another firearm before answering those questions may satisfy the demand for immediate action,” the commentary said. “It does not prove that banning another firearm would have prevented this mass murder.”
These people are retards.
Be prepared to be ignored for the rest of your miserable lives.
Just trying to strip more rights from proper gun owners.
What foot-dragging nonsense. Anyone could tell them that an SKS is just the Chinese version of the Kalasnikov assault rifle. A police firearms instructor or a soldier could tell them every pertinent detail in about a minute. It’s a weapon of combat, in other words for shooting at thjngd that can shoot back. “Hunting’ with one is about as legitimate as fishing with a grenade. Political cowardice is the only thing stopping them from prohibiting it.
Why not discuss the shooter and his mental state? THAT should be the main focus here.
Not to worry when cunada becomes 51st state millions of assault rifles will flow into canada. Trump to-do list, kidnap Venezuela pm, bomb hell out of iran, forcefully take Canada ( or kidnap pm). It’s a great time to be MAGA!
Now that the Alberta separatists have lost there’s no chance in hell that the gun advocates in Alberta are getting the American style gun laws they’ve been hoping for. Too funny 🤣
Bet these MUTTS dont even know the difference between Restricted and Non-Restricted….. Blind leading the deaf.
I wouldnt be surprised if all these members were from India and have only been in this country for 10 years.
It would be immoral for anyone to hand over their lawfully acquired firearms to the morally and cognitively impaired kleptocrats running the country… into the ground, under any circumstance.
With their prior history and continuing pattern of mental illness, rampant corruption, egregious criminal behavior, and flagrant disregard for the constitutional rights of their “subjects”, they failed my criminal background check.
All assault style rifles should be banned in Canada
Anonymous loves sitting on Carney’s 🍆
Our laws are too strict and aren’t proven to restrict crime we need to reverse all laws the Liberals have implemented.
I’m far more concerned with the millions of unvetted newcomers than with legal gun owners.
This gun ban needs to be completly reversed. Decisions based on biased opinions and uneducated people. Only guns civilians shouldn’t have the right to own would be missle/rocket/grenade launchers anti tank or plane guns and fully automatic REAL ASSAULT weapons. And anything that was actually built for military use and is currently being used by the military. Why are all you liberals so dumb that you think we’ll all be safer if only the police and military are allowed to have guns? Do you honestly so blindly believe that your precious Mark Carney or any politician actually wants whats best for us Canadian citizens? Streets are safer without criminals running around playing gangster. Streets are safer when an educated daily vetted P.A.L holders can help the lack of law enforcement. Government will flood media with how bad guns are but don’t ever show how legally armed citizens can actually stop crime before it happens when police aren’t around. Protect yourself and whats yours Canada. Get educated and get trained. My kids rather go the range then street corner.
I didn’t know that first nations used sks traditionally for hunting. Interesting because its not that great of a hunting rifle.
Take your SKS and shove it straight up you ass redneck boy!!
Lol nobody cares. Ban them all!!
The people in this comment section calling the SKS an assault rifle are hilariously uninformed. Assault rifles have been prohibited in Canada since the 1970s.
They need to go after the criminals and deal with them not law abiding citizens !!!!!
I’ll be keeping all my firearms and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Everyone go and get your PAL. Protect your families from the imported lovers this country brings in
Lol @ Jimmy. What rock have you been hiding under? The Alberta separatists lost the Referendumb buddy
When we become part of USA we’ll all own an assault rifle or two
Cool we’ll ban it then. Along with all other assault rifles
Banning it will do nothing. People will just find another weapon to use.
White trash rednecks can’t be trusted with assault rifles
DERP!, slow drooling, seal like clapping, derp derp DERP
Keep guns like the SKS away from stupid rednecks
So if you’re native and vommit a murder with an sks , it’s acceptable ? Go figure !
The group that hasn’t met is also extremely ill-informed about any type of firearm, they have no idea what a PAL is, and have zero stats to claim. Peanut gallery.
I’ll be keeping all my weapons thanks. The way things are going in this world, they will be needed.
