A former Alberta cabinet minister says Premier Danielle Smith won’t survive the crisis in her United Conservative Party amid fallout from the separation referendum.
Peter Guthrie, who was removed from the UCP caucus after criticizing the government over a health-care procurement scandal, now leads the upstart Progressive Tory Party of Alberta.

He says Monday’s referendum angered both federalists and separatists and leaves Smith with more enemies than supporters.
About 75 per cent of voters cast ballots to keep Alberta in Canada and not to have a second, binding referendum on leaving the country.
Smith’s office says Guthrie is out of touch with Albertans and peddling misinformation.
On Wednesday, the premier said anyone running for or speaking for her UCP must accept its pro-Canada stance.
She said separatists intent on turning the party into a vehicle for independence should join a different party, warning internal division could cost the UCP next year’s election.
Call an election the ucp needs dismantling
Danielle’s turds are smarter than any liberal or their voters
I WANT TOTAL LIB CONTROL. THEN I CAN WALK AROUND IN PANTIES WITH SILK RUBBING MY BALL SACK FREE .THEN I CAN BE ME
Yeah pretty sure she is more secure than ever, especially now that we flushed Eby, best thing we ever did in BC
Removed from cabinet says it all Guthrie, people were given their right to vote and have their say. Supporting freedom of choice should have relevance. The Canadian people have a right to voice their opinions and have a choice with what happens in their Country. It is called Democracy.
” United Conservative Party”
No longer united!
SMITH IS TOTALLY UNBALANCED. SHE CROSSED THE FLOOR FROM ONE PARTY TO ANOTHER. DIVIDED HER NEW PARTY, THEN SETS OUT TO DIVIDED CANADA.
SHE AND THE UCP HAVE TO GO.
Progressives can get fucked.
Hopefully internal division would cost the UCP next year’s election. We are tired of UCP and their US method of privatization of health care, private police forces, forcing the dark mornings on us. A true Conservative party would be a good change.
Sounds like wishful thinking from someone trying to manufacture his own relevance. She’ll be fine. Guthrie not so much.
Manufactured rage from a clear minority.
Has she blamed Carney interference for her referendumb flop yet?
I think that all the opinionated commenters here should buy a UCP membership and attend the convention in Calgary @ the end of Nov. Make sure your voice is heard.
Are you afraid of democracy now?
One thing though, whatever happens within UCP, let’s never ever allow NDP to take over. That would mean Alberta is done for sure.
I do like the idea of Alberta Independence Party.
I was hoping that a Premier of Alberta would actually be putting Alberta First.
She has made some difficult and very pro Alberta(ns) decisions in the not so distant past, even invoking notwithstanding because it was in the best interest of the majority of Albertans.
Now, with this Canada First stance, I’m not so sure Premier Smith actually has our backs.
I think she is “quiet quitting”. She flipped from Alberta first to Canada first over night. None of the YES questions matter if she is going to continue this path as Carneys lap dog.
UCP lost me at Carbon tax anyways. They founded the party on carbon tax and now they support it. No thanks.
When a Premier admits she is ‘Canada First’ instead of the province they were elected to represent then of course voters are going to shun that person
Looks like both Alberta & BC leaders gambled on increasing their power & hold on their respective provinces only to having a good chance of losing that hold & power.
I wonder if the answer will be the creation of a new party? If Premier Smith demands her party members be federalists, pull the 25% pro-liberation people together and start your own political party.
Alberta Independence Party, instead of liberal vs conservative vs green vs first nations, open to all.
Better to use your fists to TALK to a Lefty, that’s all they’ll ever understand, and trust me it’s easy
Danielle is not the problem, voters that cannot see that paying since 1905 shoots Alberta in the foot everday of the week. Voters must wake up , we are not anti Canada just Anti corrupt Liberal Government!
I wasn’t too surprised with Mondays vote. Certainly not disappointed.
25% is not insignificant but it’s a long way from a majority.
Polling suggests that only 11% actually supported separation. The rest of the 25% wanted a second referendum but didn’t necessarily support separation.
11% is even further from a majority.
The next few weeks will be interesting, an election in BC that could easily change that government. An election in the US that could change the course of that government.
Danielle Smith will be front and center at the UCP convention next month.
There is one riding musing about calling for a leadership review but they appear to be a small minority. 22 ridings have to have the exact same wording in a motion at the convention to force a leadership review.
That’s pretty unlikely to happen.
Every UCP MLA save one who isn’t running again is supporting the Premier. Most riding associations have already put out statements supporting the Premier.
Interestingly, the president of the one riding is also the co-chair of “Let Alberta Decide” campaign.
She has said that though she may initiate a leadership review, she would likely support the Premier.
Some argue that this referendum has cost a lot of money. While that is true it has also bought unprecedented attention for Alberta within Canada and around the world.
The Federal Government is already discussing immigration reforms with Alberta. That will boost the voice of every other province.
The east side of the country is now much more aware of the value Alberta brings to the country. Whether they like us or not.
People can slag Carney if they want, I don’t agree with everything he stands for but he has changed the conversation with Alberta far more than any PM in a long time.
Release the Mraiche files!!!
“Former Alberta Cabinet Minister” vs. “Opposition party leader”… headlines matter.
Peter Guthrie aka Maxine Bernier.
Hey me. Do you believe left pare any better/different?
If Smith had any honor as a politician and human being, she would step down. She was the catalyst for the separation movement. SHE went down and schmoozed with Trump. Drank his booze, ate his food, slept at the sleaziest little whorehouse in Florida.
She comes back and boom separation ensures. She should be charged with treason.
A loser (Guthrie) predicting a loser. How quaint.
Reading these comments it’s easy to see the intelligence – lack of – in right wingers. Devolving into name calling is simply a means of displaying your displeasure with the result without actually understanding any of the issues. The shattered use of the English language is also a sign of education – lack of – in all respects. Please go back to school and gain a method of reasoning so that when you enter a fray it is with some basic intellect.
Did he use his equity card before speaking? How quickly people forget the 4 years of hell NDP put Albertans through. NEVER AGAIN!
We need more politicians such as Peter Guthrie. Honest, smart, willing to stand up against internal corruption etc etc. I only wish he had joined NDP to help further his cause.
You guys stick your nose in ours…I’ll do the same! Difference is our guy didn’t try to sellout everyone in the country!
@ heather….it says BC resident doesn’t it?!
Hey Bc resident,
Go blow it out your ass. Are you a BC resident or an Albertan? Pick a side.
Smith soon will join poli peeve on the sidelines.
You’ll see….she’s done already. She might just linger like Pierre is doing because she doesn’t want to go back to the radio. Just like Pierre doesn’t want to go back to Telus. She’s a woman without a home/ country. The separatists are on their own and the others will return to the wildrose party. That leaves nowhere to go but home. She had her chance and it failed but this is what happens when you have an attempted coup/ takeover. If you win, you win big….if you fail you fail catastrophically. If you try to mutiny and fail, they just don’t let you go back to work as normal. You WALK THE PLANK. It’s a good thing The immigration has stopped because she atleast has a chance at Tim Hortons now! She’ll eventually be on the CTV panel with Christy Clark giving their advice as amazing ex premiers …. as they see it?!
Guthries grapes are sour. He is irrelevant.
Smith will be fine
Lefties are as sharp as a bag of wet hair
Trump shats out turds smarter than carnhole! Fug you canatards are SO DUMB!
Sam – effff euuuuu dummm dummm maga
Governor smith is just going to keep making seperatists policies based on the other referendum questions. Smith is a serious threat still to Canadians and Canadian sovereignty. Canadians must demand her removal
I agree with Guthrie. He isn’t out of touch in this regard. Smith let this happen. Wasted our money on this referendum and other political cr@p on her agenda. I don’t think her political career will fare well going forward.
Trump will continue to take a dump down carnhole’s throat. welcum to cunada land of DUMDUMS!
There is no reasoning with the left, there is no getting through their brainless heads. All they understand is being smashed and smashed and smashed!
@dan, keep sucking carnhole you sh*tstain
Carnhole? Transing your kids? My God, you conservatives get dumber every day, if that’s possible.
Vote for 1000 pound nenshit with a chicken carcass in each hand, all you DUMB anti Albertans who voted to STAY and keep scking carnholes shriveled weiner
Seen the polls? The wishcasting is hard and heavy. The NDP has lost all leverage and wants to run on transing the kids again. The separatist hard core hasn’t a compelling leader alternative. Smith is in a fine position.
She is doing a fine Job, and also she is going into MILF territory!
Amazing how Smith, initially the separatist champion, is now pro-Canada. Maybe she should tell that to her UCP MLA’s!?
Steve, you better go check again
She’s gone or the UCP is going to be split, I don’t care which
I have talked with Mr Guthrie many times. He is becoming more extreme by the day as his dreams of power continue to slip away.
I and many Albertans agree with many of his points. What we disagree with is fracturing the UCP so he can become the boss.
His quest for power is obviously more important to him than Alberta.
For that reason alone he is a traitor to all Albertans.
She won on every issue. Stories like this are cope
