U.S. President Donald Trump says he is providing an exemption to 50 per cent tariffs for some agricultural goods that he said are “consistent with the interest of the United States.”
Under the amendment issued by the White House on Friday, 22 products previously subject to 50 per cent tariffs would be allowed to cross the border duty free, while 100 new products were added under Section 338 and would be subject to a 50 per cent tariffs.
In his proclamation, Trump asserted that the tariffs were imposed to “offset the burden or disadvantage on U.S. commerce from Canada’s discrimination or unreasonable and unequal imposition on U.S. auto and auto part exports.”
Items that will be subject to exemption include corrugated paper and boxes, plastic boxes and crates, plastic packing bags, refrigeration and freezing equipment, agricultural machinery, filling and labelling machinery, packing machinery, non-adhesive plates, sheets, film, for and strip, and seaweed and algae products.
New items that will be subject to tariffs include cocoa powder, paints and varnishes, shampoo, municipal and clinical waste, wooden coffins and sticks, carpets and turf.
Based on U.S. trade numbers from 2025, the value of the goods Trump is removing tariffs on is $5.1B and the value of the goods the U.S. is putting new tariffs on is only $2.6B.
The White House said the changes will come into effect Oct. 30.

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins said she was “pleased to have secured additional tariff exemptions for products crucial to Maine’s agricultural industries, including blueberry, potato, apple and seaweed producers.”
“Many of our farmers and growers rely on specialized equipment, packaging materials, and other products from Canada that are either unavailable from American suppliers or cannot be replaced without incurring significant expense,” she said.
The Maine senator said she has had repeated conversations with United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick where she has asked for tariff relief for certain imports.
Trump’s trade war with Canada has become a political flashpoint in states like Maine and Michigan ahead of November’s midterms.
Collins has repeatedly broken with Trump over his tariffs on Canada. Maine shares a border with Quebec and New Brunswick and relies heavily on trade with Canada.
But Trump’s unpopular policies — including his tariff campaign against Canada — have put Collins’ seat in jeopardy. Her Democratic challenger, Troy Jackson, has made the trade war with Canada a key issue in the tight race.
Collins has argued on the campaign trail that her behind-the-scenes advocacy has secured tariff relief, pointing to the Trump administration’s decision to lift duties on road salt and concrete.
Jackson has countered that Mainers “can’t eat road salt” and small carveouts won’t reverse the wider economic damage caused by Trump’s tariffs and trade war.
Jackson responded to his challenger’s tariff announcement Friday by saying Collins “enabled this chaos, voted to confirm the people behind it, and now wants credit for bringing a cup of water to put out the fire.”
“Mainers needed help long before Susan Collins needed saving. But apparently, families struggling to pay their bills wasn’t enough of an emergency. Her losing her job is,” Jackson posted on social media.
“We deserve a senator who stands up to Trump — not one who rubber-stamps his agenda and begs for relief from the chaos she helped create.”
Collins said she “will continue working directly with administration officials to seek additional relief and encourage a broader trade agreement with Canada, our neighbour, ally and largest trading partner.
According to the latest poll from Beacon Research and Shaw & Company Research, Collins and Jackson sit neck and neck, each with 49 per cent of the vote.
The U.S. midterms are scheduled for Nov. 3.

Is this after he took Putin’s coc out of his mouth
To all those who whine about Canada, not pulling its weight militarily when they did build a plane superior to the US they were told to scrap it by the US. Perhaps Canada should enrich uranium to weapons grade in order to contribute and see what kind of reaction they would get.
Yale professor
So you are americanized
Yale boy . Bye bye I don’t the USA cares.
@Buck. Respectfully, that is not true. It is specialized steel not available in Canada. Also as an aside the industrialized carbon tax system is inherently designed to shield trade exposed sectors like steel.
@Ben. The steel is available in Canada but higher price due to industrial carbon tax that Carney has not rescinded. Canadian manufacturers are at a disadvantage because of Carney.
I don’t care if Canada loses jobs if they transfer to the USA. That is business.
Trump doing an amazing job. More jobs are coming back to the USA. Tariffs on Canadian.goods making them more expensive and thus Americans are making in America options. Canada has been cutting USA’s grass for years and glad Trump took action.
The misinformation about Chinese Steel continues. There is a 25% surtax on certain Chinese steel products and 50% over a certain quota. The LNG expansion, which is private, is going to import specialized steel not available in Canada. This specialized steel will be exempt from tariffs.
Dumb and dumber. Carney and Ford
Carney could help Stelco by canceling the industrial carbon tax and preventing cheap Chinese steel to be dumped into Canada eroding Stelcos market. Instead, Carney plays cynical political games.
Mr Orange gonna go down as worst POTUS in US history!!!
It doesn’t matter any more….thousands of canadians don’t care about the ugly usa…..we’ve moved on forever..
Meanwhile Carney is in Turkey hoping they might buy something from Canada. Absolutely pathetic, Canada is Oliver Twist begging for gruel
If only he would remove himself from the planet!!!
I would like to see Trump increase tariffs. Canadians have been grifting for to long and not doing their fair share with continental defence.
Let’s make it perfectly clear…Stelco jobs are being lost because the owners are US Trump supporters! Carney, just like other companies promised to take care of people during this Trump dictatorship of the world, if it were not US owned he could have helped. Taking it to court may or may not make a difference but I do hope if anything it becomes controlled by Canadian ownership not US. This is a good lesson for us to not allow US ownership.
So….is Trump admitting he does need things from Canada? The only reason he is doing this is to try to get votes before the election and as usual, he does what benefits him and adds even more tariffs than he took away. Steal from George to pay Paul! It will be so good to finally get rid of this tyrant!
Carney stated clearly he was the best choice to get a deal with Trump. Clearly he oversold himself and his skill sets as a master negotiator. 18 months later there still is no deal.
Instead of Carney making a deal with the USA he would rather go “Elbows Up” and play political games instead. The loss of the Stelco jobs is all on him.
Isabelle. So you don’t know either. You’re just making unfounded assumptions that we can ignore.
And yet it doesn’t make any difference as the consumer will still be paying the same as with the cost increase when there was tarrifs.
@Rich. Clearly what they have done to date isn’t working. 100,000 jobs lost and Carney still has no plan
Vanessa. What’s needed.
Carney and Ford ran campaigns to elect them to “protect jobs”. Neither have done that. They prefer to go “Elbows Up” instead of doing what is needed.
Tracey. I searched for Carney comments re deal withcTrump during the election and found articles referring to Carney saying he was the best placed candidate to deal with Trump. I didn’t say I had a video. You could easily do the same search.
All you Cons are repeating the same claim that Carney guaranteed a deal, which isn’t possible. Carney could say that he is best placed to get a deal. He could say that he’d try and get a deal. But if you’re going to claim that he guaranteed a deal most Canadians are going to want proof.
@Rich. Tell us the videos you review including date and time. How many videos did you review. Please provide that information. Saying you “searched” something isn’t citing nor providing proof what you say is true. So if Google doesn’t find it, it doesn’t exist?
Scott. I did. I pointed ourbthat i searched the 2025 election campaign where Carney said he was yhe best placed candidate to deal with Trump. Google it. Saying, “I have a video” isn’t a cite to a video because it doesn’t give me a way to find the video. Do you understand.
@Rich. Perhaps you can cite your claims then. Lol
I heard the job losses in Canada will be grim for October. That doesn’t include the 100,000 the two months previous. Carney “Elbows Up” approach is a foolish choice.
Grant. Not helpful without a cite.
“Build Canada Strong” -Carney has not got one project completed, let alone started or even approved. His fantasy of high speed rail is now just a wet dream as most don’t want it and current Quebec govt ejects it.
Stelco Union is blaming the job losses on Carney..
@Anonymous. Yes and Carney promised to get them eliminated or reduce. Total fail.
@Scott: Hey stupid, these tariffs are trump’s.
zzzzzzz….zzzzz
@Rich. I have video footage of Carney making promises. He in fact attacked PP saying PP could not get deal but Carney could. Carney implied and promised to get a deal. If you want to ignore those promises that is your prerogative.
In over 18 months Carney has not got one tariff line item reduced or eliminated. In fact the tariffs are worse under his direction than under the Trudeau regime.
I’ve looked into Carney’s comments during the election campaign where he said that he was the candidate best positioned to deal with Trump, which isn’t a promise to get a deal at any cost. Reading the comments, it seems like the Cons have misinterpreted this statement to be a guarantee to get a deal. No one would guarantee success in any negotiation because that could only be accomplished by accepting anything the other side offered, good or bad. Maybe the Conservative way is to give the Americans anything they want to secure an agreement with the U.S., but the majority of Canadians clearly don’t want the Government to accept a bad deal.
@Ben. That is what I wrote. They are rejecting the “associate” member status for Canada. This was really made up by Carney and Ursula for a splashy PR campaign. Germany doesn’t want Canada to have the status also, amongst others.
@Tony F. Respectfully, France objects to the term associate membership, not Canada becoming closer to the EU. Also Carney’s ultimate goal is to increase trade with the EU. Associate membership, or whatever nomenclature one uses, is a step to that very laudable goal.
I am the only “guy” who can get a deal with Trump. I know how to manage Trump and understand how these negotiations work. I will get a deal for Canada.
Rich. Sounds like Carney wants to “sell out” Canada to the EU. Actually funny now that multiple EU countries, including France and Germany won’t allow Canada to become an “associate” member anyways as they want to maintain good relations with the USA.
Ben. Luckily there is multiple instances on video of Carney making the promise during the 2025 Election campaign.
People keep saying Carney promised to get a trade deal with Trump. Firstly, the claim mixes up agreeing to negotiate with promising a deal. Carney said he wanted a mutually beneficial agreement, not one that makes us a vassal state. Secondly, the USA kept moving the goalposts and changing their mind behind the scenes because of intra-administration differences. Thirdly, the Canadian public is overwhelmingly against caving to the US, so Carney is being politically astute and listening to the people of Canada.
Jack Sproule. Carney didn’t promise that he’d get a deal. If you have evidence that he actually said this and not that he was pursuing a good deal for Canada, please present it. As to a possible deal, that will depend on whether the U.S. is prepared to negotiate in good faith; they moved the goal posts in August which led Canada to walk away. Wouldn’t be the first time Canada walked away from a bad deal with the U.S. Simon Reisman walked out of the Canada – US FTA negotiations for the same reason. Harper even said that Carney was right to walk away in August. But maybe you would prefer any deal to no deal even if it sells out Canada.
Maybe Carney can get a deal done just like he promised he would over 18 months ago.
Anyone else had enough of this nonsense from the Orange Idiot?
Over 100,000 jobs losses in Canada last two months. But who cares says the Yale Professor.
@Yale Professor. Hence why Canada has the worst economy in the G20 and getting worse by the day. But please stay “Elbows Up”. Over 75% of Canadas trade is with the USA.
Who cares…Canadians have moved on…for me, America does not even exist. And you know what…a lot of Canadians are now actually better off. So daiper don and his gang can go sit on the toilet…p.s. I sold ALL my American stocks, florida house and now spend my hard earned Canadian money in Jamaica…bye-bye usa….
I think Trump is doing an amazing job.
Canada has one of the worst performing advanced economies in the OECD. Canadians can thank Trudeau and Carney for that.
Holy Hannah! Why are there are so many anonymous posts here? Put your money where your mouth is.
Nikki Sudds is a russian coward troll.
Trump needs mental help.

Don’t have any answers eh LOL!
Canada can’t exist without the USA. More delusional thinking by Elbows Up Canadians as they believe what Clowney tells them.
Hey Murica…how did Korea work out with all your efforts? Are they united and democratic? How’d 15 years in Nam help? Is it democratic? How was that Dien Bien Phu thingy. To eschew the old saying, it’s not the gun, it’s the gunner. Viet Kong kicked your butts…so did North Korea. Rome had a nearly 500 year reign. The Brits, a good couple hundred. You barely made it a generation before becoming the laughing stock of the world. World’s biggest economy (temprarily) and you can’t offer universal access to health care? Affordable prescriptions and education? Beat your chests all you want…pathetic, like Orangy boy.
Anonymous the loser. What, you have no friends so you rant on your posts. Grow up ya baby.
Anonymous your a big mouth cry baby. Go wail in your mothers arms ya loser….
And we as Canadians are to be grateful that Trump has reduced the tariffs on the supplies the US needs, I think not!

By the way, why are so many americans here on a canadian news site? Hmmm, smells like separatist eh comrade.
Canadians have a stench of superiority
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think you are talking about yourself. Hows that iran war going.?
Let them sink or swim on their own with no help from the USA, including military support
Sure, let Russia or China take over, better than being taken over by Trump.
Should have read Trump removing himself from the planet
for all that advanced military power and spending, kinda embarrassing yall keep getting defeated by some illiterate idiots in the desert huh? how about that vietnam war? iran? Lol stay mad 🫵🤣
Canada is just like Carney. All sizzle and no steak. Hence why their economy is last in the G20. lol
Does Canada have any submarines, fighter planes, or aircraft carriers that currently operate? Just wondering…..
Canadians have a stench of superiority, yet they have no military and basically rely on the USA to do everything for them, including shooting down a balloon in their own country. They are like an immature child that want to leave the parents but has no resources to do so. Hilarious.
literally just read the comments lol
I want the USA to totally boycott Canada as they are anti-American and going Elbows. up. We don’t need them. Let them sink or swim on their own with no help from the USA, including military support.
Steve Hughes
That’s one of trumps hundreds of lies that are sucked up hard core Republicans. Trump could say he created the earth and you people would believe it.
Our “elected” leaders don’t care what we want….
Neither does trump, all he wants is to fill his pockets with more money. So your comment is meaningless because you are also a pawn.
Love listening to the Trump haters, Czarney supporters, Macron morons, Meloni mouthpieces….you are all sheep.
They are destroying our countries from the inside while you idiots take sides, on whose right.
Its all a game….and you pawns are doing exactly what your suppose to….they gain more power and wealth, whilst we argue.
Pathetic….Our “elected” leaders don’t care what we want….
It all sounds desperate
But……but……..but……… doesn’t trump always say that the US needs nothing from Canada?
@Steve Hughes
Are you high? Explain your statement and provide evidence.
Trump should add more tariffs. Canadians have been taking advantage of our friendship
Canada can continue to go Elbows Up and destroy its own economy. Follow Carney right off the cliff. Lol
In all fairness americans are just dumb enough to believe trump lol
Never underestimate Canada Trump. We are true north strong and free unlike your country which is pathetically low on world freedom and democracy indices.
And then reinstall them the day after the mid terms? He’s relying on american voters being stupid.
Mostly, they’re not.
Too little, too late.
“wooden coffins”, thought they would need these due to trumps war that he never started lol!
“subject to tariffs include cocoa powder, paints and varnishes, shampoo, municipal and clinical waste, wooden coffins and sticks, carpets and turf.”
Not sure why we’re selling clinical waste to the U.S, but does Canada even produce most of the other items?
Duh, we like tarrifs. We like trump and his people making billions while we pay more.
Yeah. I see. I know. Alright. Fine. Aldnxkz, mancjs,s indeed. Aldmdma, adn
Congress long ago declared Trump’s tariffs illegal but that hasn’t stopped Trump from making life more expensive for Americans!
Drop dead you republican pos.
@Gord. You realize Doug Ford is buying electricity from USA this winter to make up for Ontario Hydro shortfalls. Enough of your cutting off electricity wet dream.
To Rick in Maine “We don’t want Canadian goods”
No problem, we can start by cutting off electricity from Hydro-Quebec since you don’t want ‘Canadian goods’.
Susan Collins, being a Republican Senator is one of the people who put Trump into power. You can’t trust any Republican as they are the ones who allowed it to happen.
Canada is saved ! (sarcasm) ps. Rick in Maine knows how to spell ?
We don’t want Canadian goods.
