First Nations leaders are preparing to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney and the nation’s premiers, the first gathering of its kind in more than two decades.
Tensions between First Nations leaders and the Government of Canada have risen since Carney was elected in 2025, including over legislation that was passed to streamline development of major projects.
Some Indigenous leaders criticized the legislation over a lack of consultation, saying it posed a threat to reconciliation.
The Assembly of First Nations has been preparing for the meeting for months by hosting town halls with chiefs to discuss the actions they want to see governments take.
The AFN released a series of position papers last week on economic development, policing and public safety, employment, and health.
One of the main goals for First Nations leaders is a First Nations sovereign wealth fund. The fund, proposed by Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, would pool capital to ensure First Nations can build long-term wealth in their communities.
Other leaders worry that if the meeting focuses solely on economics, other concerns like homelessness, addiction and suicide may not get the attention they deserve.
“Unless the prime minister, the premiers and the territories are going to look a little bit deeper than resource development or economic reconciliation, I worry that they’re not going to be successful with their agenda,” Jeff Copenance, the chief of Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, said.

Alberta’s recent referendum shed light on the inclusion of First Nations in decision making after First Nations in the province said there were “unnecessary obstacles” to being able to vote.
Siksika Nation said that while it was pleased with the outcome of the referendum, the polling station in its community was understaffed and it did not receive enough ballots from Elections Alberta.
The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) said it will be bringing its priorities to Ottawa on Monday, with a focus on treaty rights, governance and reconciliation.
The AMC said it will be pressing for action on economic sovereignty while making sure that First Nations are consulted in all decisions affecting them.
“Our Treaties and our alliances with the Crown are agreements between Nations. They are not historical arrangements to be set aside when they become inconvenient,” said Grand Chief Kyra Wilson. “We will not accept a relationship defined by promises without action. We expect to be treated as equal partners, and we expect governments to work with us.”
Wilson said the purpose of the meeting is to develop next steps for how Canada and First Nations leadership can work together moving forward.
“We know that one meeting is not going to resolve longstanding issues that we continually deal with every single day,” she said, adding that participation in the meeting is not consent to any major project or decision.
“The true testament of this meeting and the outcome of this meeting is not the meeting itself. It’s going to come in the action and the commitments that are followed through on in the days, weeks, months and years following October 26th,” Chief Tréchelle Bunn, of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, said Saturday.
She said she is hoping to share a message with the prime minister demanding accountability following a July 2024 apology to the Dakota and Lakota nations for “generations and decades of discrimination, exclusion, and misrepresentation of our people” that she said has not been followed up with action.
The AMC said it is “sad” that all Chiefs will not be provided the opportunity to speak at the meeting, and while each nation has their own priorities and concerns, the issues of sovereignty, treaty rights and governance affect them all.
“We are not opposed to responsible economic development. We want our people to prosper. We want investment, employment, business opportunities and ownership, and a fair share of the well-generated from our territories,” Chief David Monias of the Nation at Pimicikamak Okimawin said Saturday. “They keep saying that this is about sharing. Well where’s our share of the wealth?”
The chief said he wants to see Bill 39, which fast-tracks major project approvals, repealed.
“Equity is an important opportunity and it’s not a substitute for our rights,” he said.
The AMC said their message is not one of confrontation, but an invitation to build a better relationship between First Nations leadership and the Government of Canada.
Chief Monias used Carney’s own words to express the importance of including First Nations in the decision-making process: “If we are not at the table, we’re on the menu.”

They’re a bunch of drunken diddlers
Sovereign wealth fund????,. Just what do you call the billions already given!!. Your allowance??
If the FN would only take it upon themselves to better their own. You would think that in all of the billions given to them, that they could have built schools, hospitals, treatment plants ect. Maybe an internal audit is required to just see where all of the money goes and who benefits from it. As long as the handout is there, why would anyone bother to change things.
If you are not understood after 400 years, you are the problem.
Let me guess…..they want another handout….
Left out the part we’re she stated that coast to coast are first natives land.
Settle down.
We’ll call you if we care to hear what you think.
Another “Show Me the Money” Carney Conference… smells like $40B/year ain’t enough!
Truth not racist . FN comes jumping out of the woodwork always looking for a way to bleed more money.
I’ll try tis one more time:

All the racists on this thread make me wonder if Canada is actually a civilized nation.
But its ok to hate on the white Canadian?
FN is a blight on society. They contribute nothing and whine and whine they want more money. The dead beats always have time to protest about something because they have no jobs and we have to look after them like pets. All the money their crookes chiefs are getting should be disclosed. Better yet cut them off from tax payers dollars. Boo hoo all the time for things that happened 100 years ago.
When do I get my reconcilliation payments? Not first nations but shot at by 3 first nations men when I was 9 on my own property. We lived by the reserve. They used to pull in our yard and whistle and say obsenities to 9 and 6 year old girls. Terrified my mother, would do this everytime my Cherokee step father was out of town. Should the rest of us suffering trauma at first nations hands get reconcilliation?
As usual all about money
@Ben. Are you paid to post for the liberals/ndp? Drivel!
Stop being a useless human being. What are you, 5 years old?

Maple MAGA Smith should be roasted at this meeting if there is any justice.”
Something, something, deny the passing of hundreds of years and pretend the passage of time is someone elses fault.
No one gives a sh#$ what natives think anymore, read posts , you have abused Canadian tax payers for decades to pay for your laziness and greed . Go back to stone age , useless entitled people
Maple MAGA Smith should be roasted at this meeting if there is any justice.
All the racists on this thread make me wonder if Canada is actually a civilized nation.
It’s time for FN to accept that they have lost the battle, are not relevant and should either join in on civilization or pack up and go back to the South Asian/East Asian lands where they originated from if they don’t like it here.
More bullsh-t. The majority have no say no rights.
Amazing, how can these tribes be sovereign?? And yet they want billions from Canada.

You sound like one who has a mouth full of poop ya loser.
The poop flinging monkeys are out in force. They may not be intelligent but they are loud.
So they say that they are a “sovereign” nation within Canada but are demanding Canada who is a sovereign nation to make a wealth fund for them? If they are sovereign maybe it’s time the money stops and they stand on their own. They don’t want economic reconciliation they think that they should be the ones calling the shots on the future of the country. Their who governance model is non existent, their “leaders” have no accountability to the rank and file FN. sorry the demands have to end.
We need to reinstate the Harper-era act that forced publication of the chiefs’ salaries. I remember there was one in BC paying himself over a million dollars, whereas a mayor of a similar-sized town would have, on average, a 60k salary.
You know, the act the Trudeau liberals repealed as soon as they defrauded their way back into power in 2015.
Just give us some booze and a couple of packs of smokes and we will call it square. You can keep your shiny beads, they aren’t magic ones.
Hey Ya,Hey Ya ,Hey Ya
FNs would have a great increase in respect if they just joined the rest of society. Their culture and art is amazing to me but so is the culture and art of many other countries that have blended into Canadian society, and they don’t face near the racism that FNs do. Enough of the Treaties that were signed over a hundred years ago. The world has changed in that time so change with the times.
Show them money and they’ll bend over and spread azz wide, just like they do in back alleys
The issue of homelessness should be considered in line with ALL homelessness in Canada! As far as everything else, if you want to have ownership of projects then you should use your portion of the $41 billion. For a people that was historically nomadic, if you want land and prosperity you should work for it like every other citizen of Canada. Too many projects in Canada have been costly and delayed because of Treaty chiefs holding out for their piece of the pie instead of just getting their members to work for it. Government and corporations should not be paying for a people’s idleness. Time to join society and quit asking for a handout. The regular taxpayers have had enough in my opinion and experience.
New name for this historic meeting, now to be annual and forever called:
“SHOW ME THE MONEY”
($40B per year ain’t enough for us Chiefs)
It’s just never enough for these money sucking leaches. They wonder why they are hated !!!!!
Redneck racists heads explode.
LOL
Just keep voting for stupid PP.
LOL
Time to defund First Nations.
WHINE WHINE WHINE !!! NEVER F/ G ENDS ! NO F/ G P/M WILL STAND UP TO THIS F/ G B/S !!! NO GUTS , NO BALLS ! I WOULD END ALL THIS B/S OVERNIGHT, IF ELECTED
SO SO SO SICK AND TIRED OF THESE PEOPLE ! ALWAYS WHIING AND SNIVELING FOR MORE MONEY. GENERATION AFTER GENERATION LIVING ON WELFARE. EVEN A SPECIAL LAW (GLADUE LAW) THAT ALLOWS THEM TO COMMIT CRIMINAL ACTS WITH NO PUNISHMENTS ! ZERO ! F/ G SO, SO, SO, TIRED OF THESE 1,000,000 YR. OLD TREATIES. ALL NEED TO BE F/ G BURNED !!!
RESERVES ARE THIRD WORLDS THEY HAVE GARBAGE AND DIAPERS EVERYWHERE . BURNED DOWN HOUSE’S AND JUMKIES EVERYWHERE TIME TO ASSIMILATE OR SUCCUMB WHY ARE WE FUNDING OLIGARCHS?
So if there are no borders why is this relevant? Nat8ves had a good run time ti fit in or frack off. Why are we paying for third world oligarchs.
Canada owes them nothing
Most Canadians have no respect for grifting FNs.
FN priorities – taxpayer money and more taxpayer money
These people have no idea of economics and what is required for Canada to become prosperous again. They are irrelevant.
I despise this crowd.
They should be talking about getting rid of the treaties. They have done nothing to better the First Nations and have created a hatred and a lot of racism towards the First Nations people.
Canada needs to get away from the Monarchy and then maybe some progress could be made towards unity instead of these racist created treaties that obviously have not fixed or changed anything since they wet signed by the monarchy and the tribes.
Let’s unify Canada instead of having division!
Just stop with the natives
I miss shame.
CHA CHING $$$$$$$$$$$
they can all go suck pemmican. i’ve had it with them, they’re like some nasty infection you just can’t get rid of no matter how hard you try. ugh!
The AFN has one attribute.
Together ,they have a full set of teeth.
Injuns should get no voice. You’re lucky we keep you around.
Its a shame that bringing First Nations to the table has just turned into blackmail on their part.
Canadian history of genocide should not be overlooked. They face a complicated history and deserve respect.
And knowing Carney, he’ll give them whatever they ask for.
We will not be held back by stone age peoples that do not want to evolve or ever control their own destinies.
The indigenous culture is history that they neglected in favor of handouts and objections to everything.
Tell me, how important is environmental assessment when they need clean drinking water? Not very, right?
Who cares of their opinion. They should not even be considered a stakeholder.
@try this.
Very well stated!
The unfortunate part is that this will never change in our lifetime as there is neither a politician or Chief that wants this to happen or is willing to sit down and change how the First Nations are treated.
What would happen if Canada were to drop the Monarchy? Would the treaties then be abolished and then we could sit together united and make Canada a better nation together.
What we have now are these treaties that create racism and negative attitudes towards all First Nations people.
There are many First Nations people that want to succeed but they are being held back by their own leaders as it would show that they can be a success which undermine the Chiefs constant any of more money and reconciliation.
Reading your post shows so much common sense but we seem not to use that much anymore in our society.
It is about time to contribute instead of demanding. Enough already…..the money tree needs to be cut down.
Enough is enough tired of listening to them whine 😴😴😴
Call it what it really is – WHINEfest.
Go dig up your ancestors and blow them
Shut up chugs
I understand. Indeed. Kejdnskwmdnjds92!dnsk
more money, more money, get a job and pay taxes like the rest of us
How about making getting a real job your first priority?
Oh, right, that will mean you getting off the welfare train, and actually have to work and pay taxes, but that’s not acceptable to you parasites, is it?
Did we vote for the FN?
Ben loves road apples.
I know I don’t care. These are not people’s, they are demanding pets.
I agree that part of the problem is First Nations peoples are dependent on transfers from government. This can be worked on. However, most of the problem is, from amongst other things, inter generational Trauma and the fact settlers took the best land and passed it to along to their families. Settlers got a step up, and if I may be so bold, settlers tried to erase First Nations peoples out of existence. First Nations were given bad land full of rocks and punished for being themselves.
Getting super sick of these feathered up FAS inbreds pretending to be serious leaders. Indian leadership is a joke. the only problem that Indians should be concerned about are the greedy clowns running their circus
So this will be a superwhine. I hope that the natives get it straightened out that ‘reconciliation’ is not ‘getting whatever we ask for’. Reconciliation is supposed to be a give and take, Learning to accept. Natives need to accept that they are a part of Canada, not a separate nation, or group of nations that get whatever they want.
The Treaties were not agreements between nations. They were clearly between the monarch, and a group of his subjects. The natives get free low income housing built for them. They get way more medical supports and education supports than they are entitled to.
I am amazed how many natives stand on their soap boxes, demanding treaty rights, yet refuse to read what those rights are. They are not equal partners and that needs to be clearly explained to them, so they can begin to reconcile to facts.
Ben: Down is right, it does not matter that there was generational trauma caused by adapting from hunter-gatherers to semi-urban life. We only owe them the rights given in exchange for the land. They do not have resource rights, When they accept the fact that they are Canadian citizens, and provincial citizens, then they get the rights and extras that the rest of us enjoy.
When the treaties were signed, there was no income tax, so all natives have been given that bonus perk for about 100 years.
If the natives want to build a fund for themselves, go right ahead. But not with our money.
The welfare parade continues ! No intention of working. No intention of paying tax. etc. etc. Will this ever end. Nope. But boy can the indigenous complain….
@Down. Firstly, treaty obligations don’t dissappear. Governments and Canadians are obligated for what was promised by their predecessors. Secondly, Indigenous rights are enshrined in the constitution. Thirdly, we have a duty of care given the generational trauma we caused through residential schools, etc. One could scream at the sky in anger and rage and ask “where’s my stuff!” but it really would not help. I have obligations because of my ancestors and am not going to squirm out of them.
Ignore them they will go away
And the grift continues. When do white Canadians get to meet with the PM and voice concerns, wants, needs, threats and demand money?
Do we even have a voice? We actually built this country. They have done nothing. I dont see any contribution from them in any infrastructure, in any nation building. All I see and hear from them is tear down and separation. ME, ME, ME, give me more give me more! Pretty well fed up with this!
