A legal expert says a lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) doesn’t hold up and threatens to delegitimize the results if Republican incumbent Dan S. Sullivan loses November’s Senate race in Alaska.
“I see no possibility of any literate voter being unable to distinguish the two Daniel Sullivans on the ballot,” Emily L. Waters, a professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage, told Global News.
On Thursday, the DOJ filed a lawsuit to block Alaska from certifying its Senate election results if Sullivan, the incumbent, doesn’t win.
President Donald Trump said he ordered the lawsuit because there will be two Dan Sullivans on the ballot.
Both identify themselves as Republicans.
“They have two guys named Dan Sullivan running,” Trump said. “So the Democrats put up a guy, I don’t think he ever voted before. All of a sudden he decides to run for the Senate and his name is Dan Sullivan.”
In the court filings, the DOJ claims the second candidate, Daniel J. Sullivan, is running with the intention of misleading and confusing voters to benefit Democratic rival Mary Peltola.

The documents further argue that, should the incumbent Sullivan lose, certifying the results would compromise the integrity of the election.
The Alaska Supreme Court previously ruled that both names could stay on the ballot.
Even if the second Sullivan was running to misdirect voters, Waters said that does not justify a legal battle.
“Judge Zeman addressed this previously in state court and said there’s no problem if somebody enters a race to harass or distract, as long as they follow procedures, their motivations for being on the ballot are irrelevant.”
She added that credit needs to be given to the voter to be able to distinguish between the candidates.
“Sullivan has enriched himself at our expense for 12 years,” she said. “Now he’s using his DC allies to try to keep himself in power and put his own interests ahead of Alaskans.”
If Peltola wins the race in Alaska, it will give Democrats one out of four seats needed to gain control of the Senate.

Alaska…..11th province!!!
The article says he identifies as a Republican but that is lacking in context…
He was a Republican during the primary and only secured 2.5% of the vote.
Now he is on the ballot as an independent.
See how shady the whole thing sounds when you have the full context?
Democrats are now searching the data bases for anyone named JD Vance or Marco Rubio to run as an independent in the 2028 general election.
The best argument against democracy is a five minute chat with the average (trump) voter.

@JJ: phuck off if you want to.
Full Moon Freaker, er, freak-out
Perhaps it’s time to ask Alaska if it wants to be the 11th province? After all they depend on Canada for many things and are closer to Canada than the contiguous US. Besides we treat Alaskans better than their own federal government.
This is the top trending story??? Global’s TDS is incurable. Maybe the NDP’s demise might be a headliner??? Oh I get it, Global can’t publish a positive story on a Conservative win.
Dems can’t win on merit, so they cheat.
No real news to report or just too lazy ?
Wow the Democrats like our Liberals will stop at nothing to win. Both are corrupt parties.
Well that Dan Sullivan’s got my vote!
The whiniest crybabies.
Does this not suggest that the Trump gov’t assumes Republicans voters in Alaska are so dumb that they can’t figure out the ballot and if they want the “Sullivan” with Incumbent beside his name then vote for that guy. Well, maybe looking at some posts from the Trump faithful, that may be the case but no legal reason to attack this vote.
The looney are out tonight
Reason #101 why the US is dropping further on world democracy indices.
Hey Lt. Stevens keep drinking that Comrade Trump Kool aid. Canadians interference in your corrupt election. What a joke you are.
@Lt Steven’s:
Get help!
Absolutely no way MR. Sullivan loses to a filthy mexican loving negro sympathizer!
Absolutely no way! If he loses, hands down it is 100% do to canadians interfering with our elections.
lol, the orange demonstrating pathetic desperation once again!!
