Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has asked Prime Minister Mark Carney to repeal the oil tanker ban on British Columbia’s northern coast months after Canada inked a deal not to change it.
Poilievre was one of several Opposition MPs who signed a letter to Carney as a federal Tory bill to scrap the tanker ban goes for second reading this week.
The group says the tanker ban “effectively donates” billions of dollars to the United States by forcing Canada to sell discounted oil profiting American refineries.
The MPs point to a proposal by Calgary-based Strathcona Resources to ship up to 250,000 barrels of Canadian oil a day on existing railroad tracks through Prince Rupert, B.C., and across the Pacific Ocean.
For the proposal to be considered, the tanker ban would have to be lifted, and the letter says the federal government is the only thing standing in the way.
Get breaking National news
Carney and then-B.C. Premier David Eby signed an agreement in July that included a promise by Ottawa to maintain the north coast tanker ban “without alteration, suspension, or narrowing of scope.”
The letter says the Opposition would also be willing to discuss amendments to the ban that would allow the Prince Rupert project to move forward.
Eby’s New Democrats lost the B.C. election on Saturday, as Lorne Doerkson’s provincial Conservatives swept to power with about two-thirds of the 93 seats in the provincial legislature.
After Carney signed the deal with B.C., Alberta formally submitted a pipeline proposal to the major projects office — but with a southern route.
The plan would largely follow the path of the existing Trans Mountain pipeline from Bruderheim, Alta., to an export terminal in Delta, B.C.
The letter says lifting the ban would give Alberta and British Columbia “an opportunity to build prosperity together.”
No. Just no. I live on the coast. I spill would irrevocably change our coastline FOREVER. Remember the Exxon Valdez? The coastline has still not recovered, and never will.
Here here, a smart change and would be another great success for the Conservative party
He must be under the impression that the LPC has an MP that can read.
Funny that – Pierre and Danielle are all “HANDS OFF OUR PROVINCE! WE MAKE THE DECISIONS, NOT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!” but then they DEMAND that the federal government dictate to the other provinces what to do when it comes to getting Albertan oil to market – Albertan oil owned by foreign corporations and profits that will go to the head offices in foreign countries. Conservatives have shown the hypocrisy for which they stand – Do as we say, not as we demand how you treat us. If BC is ok with the tanker ban removal, then be it but ask BC to request it’s removal, don’t DEMAND that the federal government remove it.
Poilievre just can’t wait to see a huge oil spill. He’ll jump for joy at the sight of dead animals and dead beaches. All to please his oil bosses. Why is this loser still leader of the Cons? He lost a big lead, the election, his own seat, 4 MPs to the Liberals, all the byelections etc..Why is he still leader? Ditch this lightweight poseur.
This guy still keeps chirping.
Go away already.
best thing BC ever did was vote conservative! The tanker Ban is like Canada shooting themselves in the foot! We need this country to prosper and to get natural gas to country’s like china would do exponential good for our planet getting them off of kerosene and coal then put a pipeline to India and clean that place up too.
You oil addicts need to figure it out…..you aren’t pumping liquefied bitumen through the north coast. PERIOD!
GO EAST
You will have no push back if you build pipes to the east …it can be attended to when the leaks start…and are discovered…AND YOU WON’T BE CONTAMINATING ECO SENSITIVE HABITS PERMANENTLY…AND DELIBERATELY
PP to dumb, we need combo of Trump, Putin, Adolf to run cunada
North Sea oil been utilized for 50 years, rough seas, no problem
That will raise some feathers
@Sean Webb. Lets call the first tanker SS Ben. It will be slow, lazy and dumb like Gen Z Ben.
Let’s call the first tanker the PP Valdez.
Hey poly pee,
You will not be missed if you go away now.
@Ben 1258 pm 445pm. Lazy entitled naive dumb Gen ZZZZ. Insufferable gibberish spouting Ben.
@ 6:18 Anonymous – The issues are not just financial. How does a ship’s owner resurrect the wildlife killed in any incident?
Any damage done needs to be 100 % covered by the ships owner
One vote here for a nothern pipeline the way of the future as they repeal the Drippa. YaaYaa!
@Rich 417pm. Agreed. The Vancouver choice is a balance and politically astute. I repeat my comment from 1258 that Poilievre is not politically astute.
The tanker ban is in place to protect a sensituve environmental resource. The tanker ban doesn’t need provincial agreement because it is within federal jurisdiction. The government has to balance various interests including the oil industry and those industries and people that depend on the ocean environment. The balance is shipping oil through Vancouver. Since the proponent wants to ship by rail they could ship through Vancouver today.
Nah
@Anonymous 344. pm. Canada is capitalized boomer. Maybe ask your shuffleboard friends next time.
@Ben 1258pm. Insufferable Ben gives his naive lefty gen ZZZZ opinion again!! Shut up!
Since all of you deniers have your iron clad pensions and paid for housing and vacation homes i can see why you oppose such a thing. Now think of all future generations who need to see canada prosper and flourish so they can have access to the same opportunities that you did. This is why the ban has to be lifted. The next ones cannot afford to keep paying the FN’s off. As the good book sez, a pale horse is coming.
@Doug 233pm. Bravo. Well said.
The tanker ban is there to protect the ocean, it’s sea life, whales, and natives who rely on all of that and have for thousands of years. The waters there are treacherous and some of the roughest in the world, extremely dangerous and that will never change. You simply cannot have massive oil transport ships trying to move through there. One day there will be an epic disaster that will destroy huge areas. Alberta won’t care about destroying BC waters. They only care about money. Keep the tanker ban in place forever.
The entire west coast is a small piece to protect? Watching all those American tankers must make you nervous. And hey! Victimhood Inc will need their cut to be bribed… thus is Canada. Infinitely broken by self interested minorities. I love my poverty! More hand outs, now!
The new BC government has made it clear that the coastline is for their use, not anyone else’s in Canada! Team Canada is ONLY for specific Canadians. Don’t you know!
Our country is run by pandering. How can we possibly consider repealing endless virtuous regulations that demands poverty in our opportunity?
The federal government is not the only thing standing in the way. Millions of Canadians including First Nations are adamantly opposed. Can’t we just protect one small part of our precious coastline from the greed of the fossil fuel industry ???
@itsme 1130am. In addition to people using the word spanky to describe Poilievre, people use “sparky” as a nickname because he said electricians are capturing “lightning from the sky” and running it through a copper wire. He beat out Trudeau who made the “speaking moistly” comment.
Poilievre is about as politically astute as a screen door on a submarine. The issue was settled and out pops the political weasal. Appealing the tanker ban on the northern coast ignores the agency of British Columbians, who have every right to determine what happens to their coastline and environment. The majority of people in BC and in Canada oppose lifting the tanker ban. Further, First Nations stridently oppose it. Good grief who is advising this poor man? I’m beginning to feel sympathy for him.
Sounds good to me. New Premier, new deal.
Awe, Mr Irrelevant PP once again trying but failing to be relevant, lol!
Open up the other 3 derelict oil refineries in Burnaby. Make our own gas.
Why do conservatives think that existing agreements do not matter?
Carney refuses to remove the tanker ban that Alberta and BC needs. The BC Conservative party has promised to promote the north. The best way to do that is remove the tanker ban so oil from northeast BC and Alberta can flow to customers who are willing to fully pay for it.
Another pipeline to Vancouver is not what the oil industry asked for. Tying it to a carbon capture project, or keeping the Carbon Tax program was not what the country needs.
Clown Carney doesn’t care about Canada his investments are primarily in USA so he’s only looking to promote his climate agenda and ink deals beneficial to brookfields portfolio but then again Canada is filled with blind sheep that have elbows.
like Spanky has any clue about economics.
It’s laughable that he spouts such nonsense continuously, like he’s the pro in the room.
