Four Peterborough residents face charges after a loss prevention officer was assaulted on Thursday.
Peterborough police say the officer confronted four alleged shoplifters at a Chemong Road business but they all fled in different directions.
Police say security pursued the group and was about to apprehend one of the suspects when they turned and sprayed the officer with silly spray.

“The pursuit continued for a distance until one of the suspects pulled a knife out, confronted the loss prevention officer and threatened to kill him,” police stated.

Several Peterborough police officers arrived and tracked down the suspects and arrested:
- Laney Smith, 25 of Park St., was charged with assault.
- Jameson Ferguson, 20 of Park St., was charged with theft under $5,000.
- Cassandra Quigley-Solinski, 23 of Dalhousie St. was charged with theft under $5,000.
- Jacob Nastuk, 26 was charged with uttering threats and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
All four were released and are to appear in court on July 25.
