SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Saint John Police are considering putting video cameras in some of the city’s more public areas.
The possible pilot project aims to gauge the effectiveness of surveillance solving and deterring crime downtown.

“We already are on camera, you go to the ATM you’re on camera, you go into the local convenience store you’re on camera,” says Councillor Ray Strowbridge, who supports the idea.

A number of residents contacted by Global News say they are very receptive to the idea, some adding they don’t have privacy concerns and that public space is fair game.
Police Chief Bill Reid did not respond for comment by press time.
