A 69-year-old man died in hospital after his condition deteriorated following a collision on Edmonton’s Yellowhead Trail Thursday at around 2:40 a.m.
Edmonton police said a Ford Escape SUV was heading east on the Yellowhead when it reportedly “suddenly changed lanes, moving directly in front of a tractor-trailer unit in the outside lane,” police said in a news release.
The SUV was hit from behind by the Freightliner semi hauling a full load and sent off the road near 142 Street.
Paramedics treated and transported the man in the SUV to hospital, where he later died.

“Initially, the 69-year-old driver of the Ford Escape appeared to have only sustained minor injuries while on scene,” EPS said.
Investigators don’t know whether the man died from injuries sustained due to the crash or if he had a pre-existing medical condition.

He was the only person in the vehicle, police said.
Neither the 29-year-old man driving the semi nor his passenger were injured.
The EPS Major Collision Investigations Unit is investigating, which caused some delays during the morning commute.

Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in this collision.
