Best known Chase credit cards

If you’ve watched any network television over the past few years, you’re likely familiar with Chase’s two flagship rewards credit cards. Chase Sapphire rewards its most loyal customers with luxury travel experiences, discounted merchandise, and access to a team of live customer service professionals. Meanwhile, Chase Freedom cash back credit cards offer bonus earning opportunities in spending categories that rotate throughout the year.

Other types of Chase credit cards

Chase also offers Slate, a balance transfer credit card that combines a low introductory rate with online tools that help you plan how to get out of debt. Ink from Chase streamlines business purchases for company owners and managers, while helping account-holders accrue Ultimate Rewards points.

However, many of Chase’s best credit card deals involve the company’s travel reward cards. Over the past few years, Chase has attracted new cardholders by offering free flights on Southwest Airlines and British Airways. The merger of United and Continental Airlines brought both carriers’ customers to the bank, and Chase’s Marriott Rewards Visa remains one of the country’s most consistently popular hotel credit cards.

Bank One’s legacy drives Chase’s future

Chase’s namesake, Supreme Court Justice Salmon P. Chase, actually didn’t have anything to do launching or running the company. Financier John Thompson created Chase National Bank in 1877, naming it after the widely admired former Secretary of the Treasury. Over the years, Chase’s parent company has merged with banks founded by such American icons as Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton, and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Chase acquired J.P. Morgan & Co. in 2000, marking one of history’s biggest corporate mergers.

However, a far lesser-known brand has held sway over the fortunes of JPMorgan Chase ever since. Chicago’s Bank One used its innovative credit card offers to become one of the six largest banks in the United States. As CEO, former Citibank executive Jamie Dimon pioneered Bank One’s strategy of leveraging larger brands to grow its portfolio of rewards credit cards. Dimon’s plan helped the bank extend its reach far beyond Chicago by attracting fans of partner companies.

The 2004 merger of Bank One with Chase helped the company become one of the largest credit card issuers in the United States, while putting Dimon at the helm of the combined firm. The financial crisis of 2008 brought accounts from Washington Mutual and Providian into Chase’s fold, rounding out its portfolio of credit cards for fair credit, but Chase reserves its very best credit card offers for applicants with good-to-excellent credit.

If you travel frequently or could benefit from one of the company’s many co-branded rewards programs, a Chase credit card may be a wise choice.
