The Liberals swept a trio of federal byelections on Monday night, adding one more member to the ranks of their majority government and picking up a seat that had been held by the Conservatives since 2018.
The Tories posted a disappointing showing in all three races, but none more than the loss of Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, where the party was relegated to a distant third-place finish.
“It’s a great time to be a Liberal in Canada and in Beaches-East York,” MP-elect Tanveer Shahnawaz told supporters in the east Toronto riding late Monday.
The Liberals’ strong showing comes in the shadow of an increasingly tense trade war with the United States.
Carney ended trade talks Aug. 21, pulling the pin on negotiations that appeared close to a deal to lower sectoral tariffs that have caused uncertainty in Canada for over 18 months.
Instead, both sides have pledged tariffs and counter-tariffs. Senior members of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration have traded barbs in the media with the likes of Ontario Premier Doug Ford and former Quebec premier Jean Charest.
“At this consequential time for Canada, voters have placed their trust in our government’s plan. We accept their support with humility and determination,” Carney said in a statement Monday.
Liberal Tanveer Shahnawaz has won the byelection in the Toronto riding of Beaches-East York.
Get daily National news
Shahnawaz managed the constituency office for former Liberal cabinet minister Nate Erskine-Smith, whose departure from federal politics prompted the vote.
And The Canadian Press is projecting that longtime Liberal political staffer Braeden Caley will win the federal byelection in North-Vancouver Capilano.
Voters in the Saguenay region of Quebec, which includes Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, know all too well the impact of Trump’s tariffs. Aluminum, forestry and dairy farming make up a significant portion of the regional economy.
The Liberals chose Daniel Gobeil, a dairy farmer and a former head of the provincial dairy producers’ association, to carry their banner in the byelection.
Addressing supporters in French late Monday, Gobeil said the government would take care of people in the aluminum and forestry sector, and be a strong voice for supply management.
The Quebec riding last elected a Liberal in 2015. Richard Martel has won four times since a 2018 byelection. The former junior hockey coach won a very close race in the 2025 federal election.
On Monday, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet effectively declared the Tories irrelevant.
Blanchet told supporters of second-place candidate Caroline Dubé that while Canada has a two-party system with the Liberals and Conservatives, “there are two political parties in Quebec: the Liberal Party of Canada and the Bloc Québécois.”
Martel was the fifth Conservative to leave Pierre Poilievre’s caucus since the April 2025 election. Chris d’Entremont, Matt Jeneroux, Michael Ma and Marilyn Gladu all crossed the floor between November 2025 and last April, effectively handing Carney’s Liberals the majority they had been unable to secure the year before.
Martel, also thought to cross to the Liberals, instead accepted a seat in the Senate.
Daniel Béland, a political-science professor at McGill University, said ahead of the byelection that a Liberal victory in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord would be evidence of a “masterful strategy” on the part of Carney’s team to name Martel to the Senate and open up a race in a close riding.

The New Democrats, whose disastrous 2025 election results saw the party lose official party status in the House of Commons, gained some ground in Beaches-East York to finish in second place.
“We’ve proved that the sting of last election was a one-time injury,’ NDP Leader Avi Lewis said in a statement.
“Tonight we more than tripled our vote share from last election, and did better than we have in any election since 2015.”
Still, the NDP was left thousands of votes behind the Liberals.
The east Toronto riding’s new representative, Shahnawaz, was the manager of Nate Erskine-Smith’s constituency office. Erskine-Smith left federal politics to run for the leadership of the provincial Liberals.
That plan was foiled when he failed to secure the party’s nomination.
Gross.
THE POOR and MIDDLECLASS HAVE GIVEN UP. THEY DON’T VOTE, DON’T SEE ANY HOPE. THEY FEEL THEY DON’T MATTER, WHICH they DON’T TO the LIBERALS. ONLY ONES VOTING ARE THE RICH, MONEY ATTRACTS MONEY. MONEY VOTES FOR MONEY. RICH GET RICHER, POOR GET POORER. THIS IS WHAT GOVERNMENT HAS ALWAYS WANTED. MAKE SURE TO KEEP VOTING LIBERAL. REGULAR BLUE COLLAR WORKING GUY HERE SPEAKING.
Liberal voters can ignore the decline of our country because they are mostly retirees and high-income sociopaths who live in upscale areas and are sheltered from the effects of bad policies. I had tried to figure out who actually supported the liberal agendas and this is a succinct answer.
Wow looks like Liberals got there welfare cheques and went wild on the liquor and safe supply.
How can anyone take these people seriously. They had Trudeau as a leader for 10 years.Talk about a lust for lunacy, unbelievable.
Wow! The sheer madness of Lie-Beral supporters is astonishing.
Hey Jay Voorhees.
I just read your Mom’s message. Well, you certainly sound like you know how to throw a party.Maybe we can get together and play “coalition” sometime .It’s lots of fun!!! We slather each other down with shoe polish and then play “Find the Banana”.
You can choose your character first, either Justin or Jagmeet. If you like you can invite one of your friends from the basement and we can add Eby as a character as well.I know you’re fond of him as well so whoever plays that character will definitely be getting their Banana peeled !!!
Call me ,Handsome
Jason,I thought I told you your internet privileges are revoked !!!
Now you tell your Ladyboy friends to leave, and get upstairs to do your chores. I don’t know what is going on down there in that basement, but all the giggling and moaning is keeping me up at night.
Enough is Enough!!!
It’s good to see so many Liberals obsessed with Poilievre. He obviously gets under their skin. Its probably his masculinity that drives their jealousy. I mean compared to All Elbows No Shoulders Carney or the Flamboyantly Feminine Trudeau, Poilievre is a Lion.
They already know Carney has failed miserably and the Liberals are about to fall,so the fear has gripped them and the panic they are experiencing is justified.
It’s OK, Liberals. We understand you cant admit to being wrong and your guiliblity has been exposed once again, but look at it this way, once the Liberals have been cast to the curb and a real leader like Poilievre takes over,Canada will return to its Pre-Liberal normality and we will finally be able to actually move forward.
People who support the liberals are stupid…Cant fix stupid….oh well….maybe its the water?
CONservative, MAGAt and seppie tears taste amazingly delicious in the late summer, don’t you think?
Not a surprise.

Do us all a favour if you want change – be the change you want to see. It isn’t hard. Look in the mirror. So many conservatives are hateful and close minded. Your polices invoke fear and uncertainty for many. No wonder you keep losing.

A recent surveys show roughly 15% to 18% of Albertans explicitly say they would vote to separate from Canada. Around 19% to 22% favor holding a binding referendum or moving ahead with a separation process. A large majority—ranging from 72% to 74%—support remaining a province in Canada.
Taken directly from the website you’re on right now. If you want some fabricated numbers then go to an Alberta separatist page on Facebook. You’ll find lots of fabricated bullshlt on there. Thank you and have a nice day 😊🖕

Actually most of Alberta wants to stay in Canada. Why don’t you have your little vote and you’ll find out
Can you cite the poll that shows you that most of Alberta wants to stay in Canada?

I’m glad the Liberals won these by-elections, It confirms my beliefs that Canada can be self sufficient and we no longer need to buy anything from the US I’m happy to live on Maple syrup and poutine while Carney banquets on Caviar and wagyu beef Canadian produced of course ???
Cons = MAGA
Same ole MAGAcontards with same ole brain-dead comments this am, lol!!

this makes people in Alberta want to separate more. even after all the fake liberal poles and propaganda they are selling”
Actually most of Alberta wants to stay in Canada. Why don’t you have your little vote and you’ll find out
I guess it’s time to seriously consider options for a ‘home base’…….maybe Panama? Mexico?
It’s a whole chicken dance.
I wonder what the election outcome would be if we go the full details as to why Carney walked away from the trade talks.
This only proves to conservatives how many unemployable far-left voters are dependent on federal welfare. How far this country has fallen, just pathetic.
this makes people in Alberta want to separate more. even after all the fake liberal poles and propaganda they are selling
Canada is circling the economic drain. Do you really think Carney will give a flying f about any of you? He’s only good at big talk, with zero results. Ask him why the Liberals have refused to disclose all details of why the recent trade talks failed. Yes, they decided it’s none of our business!
Carney is heavily invested OUTSIDE of Canada. He’ll retire a very rich man, thanks to all morons who voted Liberals in for the past five terms now.
Enjoy your tent and crickets.
of course like a bed bug .once infested hard to get out, they will find ways even if nobody want them
Nothing unexpected just more idiocracy from people who have an economic suicidal tendency toward Liberal deficit spending and spiralling national debt, resulting, along with a trade war with our 80% trading partner, in disaster for Canada. But the elbozo lemmings will just eagerly follow Carney off that economic cliff.
One thing for sure, notice how you can give Elbozos facts and quote sources, and all they can come up is ad hominem.
Zero intelligence. Just blame everything on Poilievre. Or Trump. Or MAGA.
So typical!
Granted, Poilievre is quite unpopular now as he’s learned way too much to the left but, and that’s a big one: Carney only won because he literally STOLE the election platform from Poilievre.
That’s not a leader. That’s a CROOK who conned you.
If you Elbozos think the Liberals are so good for Canada then go to the Economy section of Global and read:
“Bare shelves at Alberta food banks as demand soar: ‘Very difficult year’”!
You think it’s gonna get better? LMAO.
What do you expect. All Pierre had was Trudeau and carbon tax. two trick pony. Plus all PP knows is politics, not running anything, so i prefer MC to guide us through the trade wars as PP wouldn’t have a clue. And this is coming from a lifelong conservative voter.
Poilievre will comment after his morning paper route is complete!
This just proved that Canadian voters are complete and utter idiots.
Canada is done like dinner.
Fools
Purse Obsessed doesn’t have the moral high ground. Nor is he better informed or more reasonable. It’s whataboutuism, projection and conflation.
Good wins for the Liberal government. End result is Canada is not moving in the right direction. More debt and inflation and stagflation. Elbows up.
Does it surprise you anymore? Over a decade of continuous decline under the Liberals and still going. Carney will return to the US as a much richer man when he is done with us. Not saying Poilievre would be much better but we already know what to expect from the Liberals. The memory of an average Canadian only goes back a month, if that.
Hopefully fires sweep through their neighbourhoids.
Remember the promise of electoral reform to properly represent voters? It was a good idea, until the first past the post system gave the Liberals a disproportionate amount of power.
Gross. A government that disarms it’s law abiding citizens, while simultaneously saying our sovereignty is in danger.from the U.S., and doing nothing to deter illegal gun crimes. Can’t make this stuff up
Lots of MAGA’s willing stooges with tears staining their keyboards here this morning. Maybe if Pipsqueak Pete had had a little real-world job experience instead of being nothing but a political fartcatcher every day of his life. it would have inspired a bit of confidence among the electors, but he’s a vapid leader who’s losing ground with each passing day. But don’t get me wrong, my advice is to keep him!
Conservatives are very unpopular now, and essentially Leaderless.
The Liberals won, its time for the conservatives to get a more centrist leader. Poilievre is grating and has high negatives. Stop pointing fingers at the media and liberals and take responsibility and replace Polievre.
Dave B, to bad the PC have the dumbest leader on earth
So Canadians fell for Carney’s lies again. Gotta be the dumbest population on earth.
Huge congratulations to China for getting is stooges elected!
Canada has voted – Elbows up, Knees Down, Mouth Open!
One party state, China must be proud…
Sigh. So Canadians fell for Carney’s lies again. Gotta be the dumbest population on earth.🙄
Well now Carney has a majority he can go groveling back to Trump and accept whatever deal is presented to Canada.
Weird how the older generation used to worry about the futures of their children and grandchildren. These days seniors are more scared of change.
Axe the votes.
Good, this is exactly what this country needs,to be brought to it kness in failure to wake people up. These are the same people that kept Trudeau in power for over a decade and they are still as blind today as they were then.
The illusion that we,Canada have the ability to stand against the U.S. in a trade war is absurd to say the least. The resulting economic damage that is about to occur will be devastating. We can not balance trade loss with the U.S. by reaching out globally. That is fantasy to think it’s possible .
We are currently faced with two options.
Take an absolute beating or make concessions to the U.S.. As long as Trump is in power, there are no other roads.
The only good news is that Trump is gone next election, if not sooner ,and the Liberal Party will meet it’s demise come next election because this trade war will be its undoing once the reality of its consequences hit Canadians where it hurts.
Sean Webb, nice.ad hominem attack. My comments stand on their own, and there was no subject to be changed. I highlighted the poor economic record of the current government, the Lost Liberal Decade. Thats fair game. Yes the Cons would have done better. Carney knew that, and thats why he stole Pierre’s platform during the campaign to replace Trudeau. The LPC delayed our last election to save themselves. Instead of negotiating with Trump in Jan 2025, our Ministers were campaigning in their ridings. They ignored an existential threat until it benefited the incumbent government in the polls. And you suckers fell for it. 18 months later and we still face the threats of tariffs.
I voted for the Elbows Up guy and he is doing an excellent job against Trump. After watching the way he dealt with that Dr Evil guy in those Austin Powers movies, I knew he was the man foe the job ! He looks a little older now but at least he got his teeth fixed.Gotta have good teeth to be a leader just like good hair. That Trudeau fella had great hair,it’s the primary reason I voted for him 3 times in a row, such a shame he hit his term limit and couldn’t run again.
Anyway, Elbows Up!,we got Trump shaking in his boots and begging for mercy
@Sean Webb
“Right wing talking points aren’t the same as sound policy and competency.”
Hey Sean, explain why the Liberal Party was set to achieve a massive loss last election when their approval with Trudeau was hovering around 20 percent if they had such sound policy and competence.
The LPC was a self exacerbated disaster then and it still hasn’t achieved anything concrete with Carney other than the platitudes of grandeur it expels from its bullhorn
What should be obvious is that Trump attacking Canada and Carney push his support to record levels.
The false narrative instead that you can expect to see will be about it being Pierre’s fault and how the conservatives need a new leader.
Dirty dirty muzzies
All liberal voters should be hanged.
Foreigners are garbage
Great. The rest of you can stuff it. Bye losers. Hahahahaha.
Unreal how this country is spiraling down hill and yet the Canadians im the big cities cant see past the sidewalk
12 Years with negative results, whatever, keep suffering. Don’t care
I might suggest the largest portion of liberal voters are retires who are sheltered from the bad policies they vote for, because none of the younger people like the liberals or what they did during or since the covid era. These younger people, myself included, do no identify as conservatives, but we already know we cannot carry the weight of the debt, the damage to society, nor the surveillance that this liberal government is pushing for. We can’t even get ahead.
The Liberal brand is really strong right now and voters preferred the Liberal candidates to the others running in these byelections. That’s not giving the finger to the rest of Canada. Far from it. Didn’t Polly run in a safe Conservative riding after failing to win his own riding in the general election? Of course that was after he lost a huge poling lead.
Right wing talking points aren’t the same as sound policy and competency. The provincial and territorial premiers are also standing with the federal government. And that’s across party lines and political philosophies. The right wing fringe movement is very over represented in online comments sections. None of their cheap slogans are catching on with reasonable people.
Purse First continues to try to change the subject offering no context for his references or any reason to think that the Conservatives would handle any of our country’s challenges better than the Liberal government.
Once again the citizens of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver give the middle finger to the rest of Canadians, no surprise there

3.3 percent is nothing to brag about. The average person’s investment portfolio grows at a better rate.
You are quoting one stat, and poorly for that matter. While others are giving you handfuls of stats.
Anonymous “Not second last anymore”
We sure are, and getting worse.
If Polliviere was so bad then why were the 3 first policy announcements made by Carney stolen from Pierre’s platform, during the race to replace Trudeau?
Abolish the Carbon tax, that Carney himself had lobbied for.
Reverse the announced changed to capital gains
And the housing initiative for houses under 1m.
And that was before he stole credit from the late Jim Flaherty for his work in the 2008 recession.
Carney ran on lies and stolen ideas and schmucks lapped it up. Meanwhile we are losing residents and companies in droves.
RIP Canada
@ Trudeau holding her purse – Still 3.3% GDP growth in Q2, Poilievre still -22% net approval, still 3 by-election victories tonight. Maybe Conservatives like you should fix your own flaws instead of fighting yesterday’s battles. Justin has moved on. You folks should too.

According to Statistics Canada, an estimated 106,134 people emigrated from Canada in 2024, marking the highest annual departure total since 1967.
That new record was broken in 2025.

Companies that were stunted before tariffs because Carbon Pricing Carney was advising Trudeau. They turned away Germany and Japan who wanted to buy our LNG. Now Japan buys LNG from the USA, and Carney travels the globe trying to secure deals that just four years ago he turned down.
@ Elbows up boomers – Canadians in 3 ridings gave each of the Liberal candidates over 50% of the votes tonight.
Ask Trudeau holds the purse if you can use his tissue.
By rigged election. Payouts behind closed doors . Nobody wants liberals
@ Trudeau holds the purse – Not second last anymore. Too bad the Conservatives put such limp challengers up against the Liberals during the years you mention. The Liberals were ecstatic when the Conservatives stacked their leadership convention to keep Poilievre. His net favourability is -22%. You have to win seats in Quebec to win a federal election in Canada.

Second last from a list of 40 countries
That just proves ya can’t get any dumber than a lib, they’re bottom feeders
@ Katy Perry’s Purse – 3.3% GDP growth in Q2. You detractors liked to point out what is now flat growth in the 2 quarters prior so get used to having these results called up.
Que the incoming garbage from MAGAcons, lol!
We deserve everything we get from our government. Elections have consequences. And people are blinded by this faux patriotism that the LPC is wrapping itself with. People apparently don’t remember when Justin prorogued parliament, for no reason other than to save the LPC from oblivion, and it was Ford as head of the association of premiers as the only person negotiating with the then incoming Trump administration about his intent to tariff the world. We had no federal negotiators. Ministers, the ones who hadn’t announced they weren’t running again, were busy campaigning in their ridings.
A few months earlier to those events the country saw a record 100k people emigrate away from Canada due to the economic impact of the Lost Liberal Decade. Yet parliament was shut and the opposition was not able to question the government.
@Elbows Up – People like the results that Carney is providing so the country is gathering behind him.
Nothing succeeds like success.
These people live hand to mouth so they vote for Carney.
Stupid frogs
Everything coming up Carney!
Do not understand why we nneed elections. Now for 10-15 years it is just like in eastern Europe ,in socialism. Stop wasting money in the name of democracy. We know the winners. If they do not win in a year they cross the floor.
