A list of excellent personal-development sites
I wanted to compile a list of personal development and productivity sites.
These sites offer real, practical information that you can use in your everyday life. They motivate you to be a better person. I find these sites inspirational, and I read them regularly. They’re not directly related to money, but the skills they impart will certainly help you in all aspects of your life, including personal finance.
Of the sites on my original list, I still regularly visit these:
- 43 Folders (“Personal productivity, life hacks, and simple ways to make your life a little better.”)
- Steve Pavlina (“Personal development for smart people.”)
- Lifehacker (“The personal productivity and software guide.”)
- Signal Without Noise (A weblog on entreprenurship and marketing.)
- Scott H. Young (“Get the most out of your life!”)
- I Will Teach You To Be Rich (“Personal finance and personal entrepreneurship for young people.”)
- Open Loops (“Because it’s your time.”)
- Slacker Manager (“Paving the path of least resistance so you don’t trip and fall.”)
- The Lazy Way to Success (“Success through cleverly avoiding work but still getting the job done.”)
- Productivity Goal (“A discussion about work productivity, time management, organization, tools and tips.”)
- What’s the Next Action? (“A weblog about Getting Things Done.”)
Get Rich Slowly readers also suggested some sites. I looked at every one. Those that I still follow are:
- Paul’s Tips (“What I’ve learned about life and how it can help you!”)
- D*I*Y Planner (“Paper, productivity, & passion.”)
- lifehack.org (“Daily digest and pointers on produtivity, getting things done, and lifehacks.”)
- The Occupational Adventure (“Passion, meaning, 360-degree abundance.”)
- Mind Hacks (“Tricks to find out what’s going on inside your brain.”)
- Solution Watch (“Your descriptive source of solutions.”)
- Life Coaches Blog (“Strategies for a greater life.”)
- The Practice of Leadership (“It’s only in the practice of leadership that we influence our world.”)
Since originally post four months ago, I’ve discovered additional sites with personal development content:
- Signal vs. Noise (“A weblog by 37signals about entrepreneurship, design, experience, simplicity, and more.”)
- Cognitive Daily (“A new cognitive psychology article every day”)
- Mutual Improvement (“Personal development, happiness, statistics, emotions, neurobiology, cognitive science and all the things that make life worth living.”)
- Dumb Little Man (“Tips for life.”)
- The Positivity Blog (“Put some personal development and positivity into your life.”)
- Wheaties for Your Wallet (“Giving consumers the power they need.”)
- Joe’s Goals (“Free online goals tracker.”)
What about you? Which sites do you read for positive information on self-improvement? I would love to continue adding to this list, to share it a couple times each year.
Since asking the question, I discovered Guy Kawasaki’s Signum Sine Tinnitu, a weblog on entrepreneurship and marketing. These are all great sites, but most seem to focus on the “getting things done” aspect of personal development. I was hoping for more suggestions. Maybe there aren’t any other quality sites.

I like “Random Thoughts from a CTO” at http://spaces.msn.com/members/chiefskipper/
Holy cats! I’m so honored to be on that list, alongside a lot of really great people whose sites I read frequently and respect. Wow! This is cool. Thanks for posting this.
You probably should add Paul’s Tips as well.
One of the best and one of my favorites- http://www.stevepavlina.com/index.htm
Has tons of personal development articles & personal development blog that is updated frequently.

That’s a pretty complete list, and has most of the blogs I read regularly, a couple more I have which aren’t strictly “Personal Development” completely, but close enough to get a mention are Positive Sharing http://positivesharing.com/ which is creating a book focusing on been happy at work, the content of which is in the blog, and more. And D * I * Y Planner http://www.diyplanner.com/, which has a huge range of templates for making your own planner stock, and a blog that has lots of tips for getting the most out of your planner for both organization and creativity.
We all think of Lifehacker, but don’t forget its lesser-known sibling, the community of Lifehack.org.
Thanks for the additional suggestions. Please keep them coming.
My personal favorite is The Occupational Adventure. So much more than food for thought on the career front. Most everything here is well and truly applicable on the life front, as well.
Yeah, Steve Pavlina takes the cake in my opinion. He is a very smart dude who really makes me DO it, not just think about it!
Great list. I have added them all.
Nice list!
I have a personal development site, Daretravels.com, (http://www.daretravels.com/). Not sure it is as good as the rest, judge for yourself. =) Been watching the World Cup for a month but new articles are coming up shortly.
Keep up the good work!

I can’t believe I forgot Mind Hacks. I love Mind Hacks.
http://www.solutionwatch.com/ has good in-depth reviews of productivity tools.
Can I suggest myself and let you decide if it’s a quality site? 🙂

What do you think of http://www.thepracticeofleadership.net/ ?
A new site and forum devoted to personal development.

Here’s his method for “How to Find What You Love to Do”
http://briankim.net/blog/2006/07/how-to-find-what-you-love-to-do/
I appreciate your idea of a hands on approach to personal developement. Many people are looking for the “how to” on becoming the type of person they dream to be. Truth is once we’ve thought about what we want to become, we only need to start the process. You may or may not want to include my blog spot. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Outstanding list! I’m always on the search for fresh information on personal development. I like what Devion Ayers said in the post before me. If it was all about the “How to’s” we’d all be Skinny Rich and Happy. (Yes that’s a book by the way) Someone would tell you what to do and you’d just DO IT. But people don’t! It’s going inside and finding out our Programs that are holding us back. Love your Blog!!
Thank you so much! Everytime I search for a good self improvement blog, I usually end up in SEO sites that have these articles just for ad clicks! Hate those sites!
These are genuinely good ones. Posted this at

Hey, thanks for the mention JD! I read your blog regularly too, and I hope you find mine of value 🙂
Here’s one I’ve found recently which I love:

Love your site. Thanks so much for the expanded sites. Personal development is so key in a rapid changing world. You’re in my feed so I’m reading daily!
we’ve recently a 3 month experiment and tour of time management/productivity systems here:
http://www.donationcoder.com/Forums/bb/index.php?board=196.0
the idea is to help people experiment with different techniques (GTD, DIT, etc.).
to go along with it we’ew also posting audio interviews with some big names like David Allen (GTD author) here:

Everyone is welcome – we’re a small site so please stop by and say hello 🙂

While technically a corporate blog focused on information for executives and entrepreneurs, the N2growth Blog has plenty of personal development content. It can be viewed at http://www.n2growth.com/blog
Hey JD – thanks a lot for the mention here. I would never have imagined anyone putting Dumb Little Man in the same universe as these other great sites.
Thanks again and good luck to you.

Here’s a good one: Martial Arts for Personal Development.

Thanks a lot for the mention and for the other recommendations (it helped me find Dumb Little Man).
Very useful. Thanks for putting this up!
I would like to submit mine for consideration also, but it is more on the spiritual side than the physical side.
Enjoy!

Hey J.D.,
Check this one out.
http://www.alexshalman.com
I have bookmarked http://www.madetobegreat.com pretty straight forward advice, worth the visit.
This is also a good one http://www.madetobegreat.com . Check it out.
I found a personal development blog with great articles, similar to Steve Pavlina, but it’s a woman blogger. She has how-to and tips, but also moving stories and is down to earth about life. It’s A Better You Blog at http://www.abetteryoublog.com
Her advice has really helped me…
I just found this post, after adding my comment to the original one where you asked this question, but here is a blog I found that always lifts me up and makes me want to be a better person:
A Better You blog at http://www.abetteryoublog.com
I would like to suggest 3 blogs for consideration for your list. The first is my own blog Three Sticks, http://www.mosesedwardmilesiii.com/blog. The second is Debra Moorhead’s blog http://www.debramoorhead.com/blog. The last is Steve Chandler’s blog http://www.stevechandler.com/blog.
Each of these provides a different viewpoint on how to improve your life.
Thanks
J.D.,
maybe you’d like to check out my bilingual blog http://www.evomend.net. Probably, the motto says it best:
“Methods change.
Jobs change.
People change.
Evomend is offering timeless resources for personal organization.”
Keep up the good work, and thanks for the wealth of resources you keep providing!
Rolf
A newbie on the scene but worth a look for sure.
I have recently started Personal Development for the Book Smart. Do check it out and give me your feedback! =D
I have a personal development blog at: http://glendellsartandmusic.blogspot.com . This is a blog filled with powerful articles that if used, can transform your life for the better. Don’t take my word for it, go there and read the information on the site, then apply it, and you will agree. The articles are truthful and well written. I’m sure you will want it on your list. Give it a try.
http://www.iamsooverme.com is a good one. It has some unique articles that you won’t find anywhere else. Good advice. Good articles to come ahead on making some cash realistically.
Hi JD,
Found this article of yours after diving into your best lists for 2006. Here is my rather large list of personal development sites. The list grows larger all the time! Blogging really does continue to explode…
